Top 11 highest goalscorers of all time

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are modern day greats! But where do they stand among the all-time highest goalscorers in football history? Let’s have a look.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are both arguably the greatest players of all time. They have a phenomenal goalscoring record. But surprisingly they are not even in the top 5 of the all-time highest goalscorers list! So who tops the list?

According to the Guinness world record, Pele is the greatest goalscorer with a staggering tally of 1,281 goals. However, this figure also includes unofficial goals scored by the Brazilian legend. Our list has been compiled based on the records from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF), which only recognises goals scored in official matches – meaning that contrary to Guinness’ records, Pele isn’t number 1 on this list.

Top 11 highest goalscorers of all time

Note: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are still actively playing and scoring goals at a rate which could see them top the list. So some numbers may vary depending on when you are reading this.
Also, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already reached the 500 goals club. He now has 525 goals in 899 matches. Therefore, it won’t be surprising if he finishes his career in the top 11 highest goalscorers list.

Josef Bican

1. Josef Bican (Czech Republic – Austria) | 805 goals

Very few people know the name of Josef Bican, but yet he has scored the most number of goals in official matches, till date. Bican was a two-footed forward blessed with sprinter-like pace. He was able to run 100 metres in 10.8 seconds, which was as fast as many sprinters of the time.
Bican was a member of the Austrian Wunderteam in the 1930s and reached the 1934 World Cup semi-finals. He played for 3 different Nations – Austria (1933-36), Czech Republic (1938-49), and Bohemia and Moravia in 1939.

At the club level, Bican was the top scorer across Europe’s various leagues on 5 different occasions. He played for multiple Austrian clubs before playing for a number of Czech clubs, including Dynamo Prague. He continued playing until 1955, eventually retiring at the age of 42. At the time of his retirement, Bican has scored an incredible 805 goals in just 530 matches at an astonishing rate of 1.52 goals per match.

Bican’s teammates said that he has scored more than 5000 goals. He has not also denied the fact, rather said: “Who’d have believed me if I said I’d scored five times as many goals as Pele?”
The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) awarded Bican the “Golden Ball” as the greatest goalscorer of the last century. He is the only person in the history of the game to score 7 goals in a game on three different occasions.

Romario

2. Romario (Brazil) | 772 goals

Romario began his career with Vasco da Gama in 1985. He then moved to PSV Eindhoven. He played there for 5 years. Romario played for many clubs including Barcelona, Valencia, Miami FC and Flamengo.
Romario played for Brazil between 1987 and 2005 and won the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Another Brazilian legend Ronaldo said that he learnt the art of goalscoring from Romario. Johann Cruyff described Romario as “a genius” in the penalty area. Romario scored 772 goals in 993 matches in his 24 years career.

Pele

3. Pele (Brazil) | 761 goals

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, fondly known as Pele, is probably the greatest footballer of all time. In the 1958 World Cup, a 17 year and 239-day old Brazilian striker emerged as probably the greatest prodigy of all time. He has won three World Cups in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player in the world to achieve such a feat.

Pele began his senior career in 1956 with Santos and stayed there for 18 seasons. He then moved to the NALS to play for New York Cosmos alongside German legend, Franz Beckenbauer, before calling time on his stunning career.

Contrary to Guinness’ records that state he scored 1,271 goals by the end of his breathtaking career, Pele had officially scored 761 goals in 821 matches.

Ferenc Puskas

4. Ferenc Puskas (Hungary) | 746 goals

Puskas was the lynchpin of the all-conquering “Magical Magyars” and led the Hungary team to unprecedented success. They once went on an unbeaten 32-game streak, winning the 1952 Olympics along the way.

He played for only two clubs in his career – Hungarian side, Budapest Honved (1943-55), and Spanish side, Real Madrid (1958-66). Puskas formed a deadly combination with the great Alfredo Di Stefano during his stint at Real Madrid as they the duo tore up defences and guided the Los Blancos to five straight league titles and three European Cups. The legendary Hungarian striker was LaLiga’s top scorer for 4 seasons in a row.

Puskas known as ‘The Galloping Major’, blessed with a thunderous left foot and superb positioning skills, scored 746 goals in 754 matches.

Gerd Muller

5. Gerd Muller (Germany) | 735 goals

Gerd Muller is arguably the most lethal finisher in the history of football. The German striker spent the better parts of his career in Germany, playing for 1861 Nordlingen and Bayern Munich. He played for Bayern Munich for 15 seasons. He is still Bayern’s top goalscorer of all time. He then moved to North American Soccer League (NASL) side, Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Muller represented West Germany between 1966 and 1974. He won the European Championship in 1972 and the FIFA World Cup in 1974.

‘Der Bomber’ was blessed with explosive power. He bowed out with an overall record of 735 goals in only 793 matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo

6. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) | 707 goals

One of the two standout players of this generation, Cristiano Ronaldo is easily one of the greatest players of all time. After starting out as a fleet-footed winger, Cristiano Ronaldo has transformed himself into a goalscoring machine. He has won the Ballon d’Or 5 times, a record he shares with Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo came into the limelight with Manchester United. He then moved to Real Madrid for a then world record fee. At Real Madrid, Ronaldo became one of the best footballers of all time, winning 15 major trophies in 9 seasons, including the historic feat of winning 3 consecutive UEFA Champions League titles. The Portuguese superstar has broken one record after another, posting tallies in the Champions League that may never be surpassed. Last summer, he moved to Juventus and has already started winning titles in Italy.

Cristiano helped Portugal to win the Euro 2016 and also the first-ever Nations League final in 2019. The two international trophies somewhat help Ronaldo to edge past Messi as the greatest player of this generation. This is arguably the greatest rivalry we have ever seen in football. Ronaldo has till date scored 707 goals in 998 matches and hopes to finish his career by topping this list.

Messi

7. Lionel Messi (Argentina) | 698 goals

Lionel Messi is a product of Barcelona’s famed youth academy, La Masia. He has been a one-club man, playing his 16th season with Barcelona. Along with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi has defined this current generation. He has also won 5 Ballon d’Or.

Messi has also represented the Argentinian senior team since 2005 and is currently their 3rd-most capped player and highest goalscorer of all time. He is regarded as the greatest footballer of all time by many, but the lack of an international trophy somewhat pushes him behind the other greats of football. He has scored 698 goals in 875 matches. Messi’s position will definitely be much closer to the top when he calls time on his illustrious career.

Ferenc Deak

8. Ferenc Deak (Hungary) | 576 goals

Ferenc Deak’s achievements have been overshadowed by his fellow Hungarian Ferenc Puskas, but Deak himself was a supreme goalscorer. He was born in Budapest, Hungary. He spent his entire playing career at a plethora of Hungarian clubs. He began his senior career with Szentlorinci AC, where he scored an astonishing 220 goals in 72 appearances. Then he played for Ferencvarosi TC, Ujpest, and Spartacus Budapest among others.

Deak also scored 29 goals for his country. But it is not known how many matches he played at the highest level. Ferenc Deak ended his career with a grand total of 576 goals. He was named the Hungarian footballer of the year in 1946. But the second world war prevented Deak from playing more for Hungary, otherwise, this legendary goalscorer might have well been higher up on this list.

Uwe Seeler

9. Uwe Seeler (Germany) | 575 goals

Uwe Seeler was born in Hamburg, Germany. Uwe Seeler played 18 seasons for Hamburg (1954-72) and eventually became a one-club legend. Renowned for his aerial prowess and spectacular scissors-kicks, he is one of the finest forwards Germany has ever produced.

Seeler played for theGerman National Team between 1954 and 1970. He won the FIFA World Cup twice in 1966 and 1970. He also finished 3rd in the 1960 edition of the Ballon d’Or. By the end of his career, he scored a mammoth 575 goals.

Tulio Maravilha

9. Tulio Maravilha (Brazil) | 575 goals

Tulio Maravilha, better known as Wonder Tulio, played for more than 25 different clubs – mostly in Brazil. He also represented the Brazilian National Team 15 times and scored 13 goals. He never lost a game for his country.

During his glorious 24-year career, Tulio claims to have scored more than 1,000 goals. However, his personal figure included friendlies and games at amateur level. He officially scored a total of 575 goals in his career.

11. Arthur Friedenreich (Brazil) | 557 goals

The Brazilian striker played for an astonishing 26 years from 1909-1935. He was the Copa America player of the tournament and the golden boot winner in 1919.

However, he never represented Brazil in a World Cup as there was a serious misunderstanding between the Football Leagues of the States of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He was nicknamed the ‘Tiger’ and was the game’s first outstanding black player. Unfortunately, he had to face many barriers and widespread racism throughout his career. He played a starring role in Brazil’s 1919 and 1922 Copa America campaign and he was crowned as the “King of football” in Brazil’s 1925 tour of Europe.

Many consider the late Arthur Friedenreich as the greatest goalscorer in football history with 1,329 goals. But that tally included many friendlies and amateur level matches. He officially scored 557 goals in his career.

New Ryzen 3000 CPUs on par/ much better compared to 9th gen Intel CPUs

The upcoming 7nm Ryzen 3000 CPUs are on par with 9th gen Intel CPUs in single-core performance, much faster in multi-core

For the past few weeks we have seen lot of benchmarks and leaks that suggests the fact that Ryzen 3000 CPUs are much powerful from the last gen especially in single-core performance which eventually boosts gaming performance.

While in multi-threaded performance, these CPUs have ripped off Intel in various benchmarks and proved its worth for workstation and productivity purposes.

AMD launches new 7nm Ryzen 3000 CPUs based on Zen 2 architecture

The Zen 2 architecture has helped AMD to make its new 7nm CPUs much better through its improved IPC, cache memory, floating-point performance and higher clock speeds.

On an average we see these new chips to be 2-3% faster than its nearest Intel competitors but we have exceptions like the Ryzen 5 3600 which even challenges its $150 more priced i7-9700K in single-core performance.

New Ryzen 3000 CPUs on par/ much better compared to 9th gen Intel CPUs

So, apart from being fast, these CPUs are efficient as well because of the 7nm process and we can expect better-overclocking capabilities which we can only see after the launch.

New Ryzen 3000 CPUs on par/ much better compared to 9th gen Intel CPUs

Another leaked benchmark from TUM_APISAK suggests that the Ryzen 7 3700X beats the Intel Core i7-9700K in single-core scores by a small margin, and in the multi-threaded performance the AMD CPU gives provides 35% better speed.

In the gaming scores, the Ryzen 7 3700X beats the i7-9700K by 4% and in workstation scores the AMD CPU leads by 23%.

In Passmark scores, the Ryzen 7 3700X looks to be as fast as the $484 Core i9-9900K CPU. While in the single-core scores, this Zen 2 just lags behind the Intel CPU by inches and also we see that the Ryzen 7 3700X beats last year’s star – the i7-8700K.

New Ryzen 3000 CPUs on par/ much better compared to 9th gen Intel CPUs

So one thing we can conclude from these various benchmarks that this time’s competition is even more intense and we can expect these new CPUs to get more sales due to its modern chipset, higher multi-core performance and neck-to-neck gaming performance with the Intel counterparts.

The final unveiling and availability of these CPUs is scheduled tomorrow and then we can officially check how these CPUs eventually perform in real-world scenarios. Here the price-to-performance ratio will play a much bigger role which ultimately will determine the fate of the Ryzen 3000 CPUs.

Juventus wanted to sign Matthijs De Ligt from Ajax as soon as possible to prevent a last-minute gazump from Barcelona, Manchester United or Paris Saint-Germain. But the two clubs have failed to reach to an agreement on the transfer fee of De Ligt.

Ajax want 75 million euros for De ligt. But Juventus have reportedly offered 55 million euros and a further 10 million euros as add-ons. While Barcelona, Manchester United and PSG are all ready to break their banks and bring the 19-year-old defender to their club. Rumours said that De Ligt had personally chosen Juventus as his next destination, but if the Serie A champions do not come to an agreement over the transfer fee with Ajax, the move would be off.

De Jong

Frenkie De Jong was asked if he would like to be reunited with his fellow Netherlands international, during his presentation at Barcelona on Friday. He answered, smilingly: “I was expecting this question. Of course, I would be happy to see him here, but it’s not up to me to say something about it. I think he has time to think about it and he has to make a decision himself, with his family and his agent, so we will see where he goes.”

Barcelona have close ties with the Netherlands. It is largely because of their association with the late Dutch great Johan Cruyff – a legendary player and highly successful head coach of the Catalan club and Ajax The Cruyff traditions have sustained, and De Jong is sure he will fit in at Barcelona because of that factor.

De Jong said: “Netherlands and Barca have always had a good connection, and Barca and Ajax have a very similar way of playing, with the philosophy of Johan Cruyff. Ajax and Barca want to play in the same way, and that’s great for me.
My dream has always been to be a Barcelona player, so the decision to come here was very easy. I’m very happy and very proud. When the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, came to the Netherlands expressly to see me, it showed that they believed in me a lot. They told me that I would be a very important player for the club.
Everyone in the squad is a great player; Barca have the best players in the world and I will have to show that I can be part of the first XI, where I can play in any position in the midfield. I’m very happy to be able to play with Leo Messi, and I can’t wait to get started.”

De Jong and Ronaldo

Juventus would like to do everything in their power to prevent slipping De Ligt from their hands. Tuttosport report that Juventus are now aiming to have De Ligt in Turin for his medical and to begin pre-season training by Wednesday. This means a move could be completed over the weekend and announced by Monday. The Turin based daily also suggest Juve could look to spread the €75m asking price over the course of the next few financial years or possibly take advantage of Ajax’s interest in Moise Kean who has already been approached by Ajax in previous months.

As Mino Raiola represents both De Ligt and Kean, it may make the deal all the more plausible. While Paulo Dybala is likely to stay in Turin but the future’s of Mario Mandzukic and Gonzalo Higuain are uncertain for now. Corriere dello Sport also report along similar lines. However, they believe the two transfers would be entirely separate deals as Juventus would retain a buy-back clause on Kean.

Intel continues to lose CPU market share to AMD’s Ryzen CPUs

The bitter rivalry between AMD and Intel started years ago, but there was a time when Intel totally ruled the CPU market. Things changed with time, it was in 2017 that AMD announced their Ryzen CPU lineup, this totally changed the fate of the company.

The 14nm CPUs eventually started to gain popularity with time and people used it for production workloads and gaming as well. Then came the Vega GPUs from AMD, also with that the Ryzen APUs with Vega graphics came into existence.

The APUs gained tremendous popularity among budget gamers for their “value for money” offerings. Also in 2018, AMD announced its 2nd gen Ryzen CPUs based on 12nm Zen+ architecture which turned to be hugely popular among gamers as well as for productive work purposes.

Not to forget, the Threadripper CPUs also have contributed to AMD’s market share due to its outstanding workstation performance. If we look into the number of CPUs sold through the year, we see that AMD is leading the charts.

The Ryzen 5 2600 has been the best selling CPU for the past year, followed by the Ryzen 7 2700X. Both of these CPUs along with others made AMD lead the charts.

For Intel, the 9th gen CPUs excelled due to its strong gaming performance. The significant high-priced Core i9-9900K and the i7-9700K helped the blue team to maintain its huge market share.

When we look into the revenue AMD and Intel both go neck-to-neck, Intel was leading until the advent of 2nd gen Ryzen CPUs that led AMD to dominate by a small margin.

But, now as various benchmarks gave us the hint how the upcoming 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs will perform, it is likely to see AMD get higher number sales as well as lead the gross revenue by some healthy margins with months.

In the global market, Intel’s market share is being consumed slowly and steadily by AMD, who has seen steady growth since the release of Zen architecture.

At the end of the first quarter of 2019, we see AMD controls 25.6% of the total consumer market, on the other hand, Intel still has a major stake of 74.4% market share.

With the release of these potential Ryzen 3000 CPUs as well as Navi GPUs, we can expect this ratio of Intel and AMD becoming 70:30. Also, the 3rd gen Threadripper, as well as the data-centric EPYC Rome CPUs, will also debut to make things sweeter for AMD.

Dani Ceballos is on the verge of joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer

Mauricio Pochettino has personally called Dani Ceballos and convinced the Real Madrid midfielder to join Tottenham this summer.

Real Madrid have gone back to their old and trusted method of buying Galacticos. They have brought in Eden Hazard from Chelsea to spearhead their attack and try to fill in the boots of Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid have also signed Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo Goes, Eder Militao. They have also signed Japanese Messi – Takefuso Kubo, who will play for Real Madrid’s Castilla side but may earn promotion to the senior side as well.

Dani Ceballos

Dani Ceballos appears to be on the verge of exiting Los Blancos, where he does not feature as part of Zinedine Zidane’s plans on a regular basis. AS report that Tottenham are drawing ever nearer to securing his services on loan for the coming campaign.

Pochettino had a discussion with the player, in which AS claim he informed Ceballos of how important he will be for Spurs. They report that conversation took place several weeks ago and it appears to be a matter of time before Tottenham get their man. The reason being, the Lilywhites have had a good relationship with Los Blancos since the 2013 transfer of Gareth Bale and there are also suggestions Ceballos could potentially be included in negotiations about potentially taking Christian Eriksen to the Bernabeu.

Dani Ceballos has recently won the U-21 European Championship with the Spanish national side. He was the standout performer of the campaign. His performance has caught the eye of clubs in Italy and Germany, who have started to enquire about the midfielder. But the strongest interest has come from England, and it seems Spurs could have the best chance of landing him.

Real Madrid reportedly also want to include a buy-back option in any deal to sell Ceballos and Spurs would apparently not be opposed to the idea. Whoever signs him will be bagging a very talented prospect, that’s for sure.

Marcelo has asked Real Madrid to let him leave this summer

Marcelo thinks that his time at the Bernabeu is up and wants to leave this summer.

Marcelo was heavily criticised last season for his form. He even lost his place in the side to youngster Sergio Reguilon under Santi Solari. Zidane, though, brought him back into the side when he was re-appointed. However, Marcelo doesn’t believe he’s guaranteed a spot anymore following the signing of Mendy from Lyon. He still has plenty of suitors and has requested Madrid listen to offers. One of those is Arsenal who are the favourites for his signature. While Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and AC Milan are also interested as well.

Marcelo

Marcelo is currently on holiday. He has been axed from Brazil’s Copa America squad in favour of Alex Sandro and Filipe Luis. His representatives are reportedly in talks with Real president Florentino Perez.

After 13 glorious years in Spain, the Brazilian feels his time at the Bernabeu is up. Marcelo could be one of the surprise sales at Real Madrid this summer. The left-back has various offers on the table and has asked the club to let him go even though Zinedine Zidane is counting on him.
