Affordable premium smartphones capturing the smartphone market says Counterpoint Research

These days we have got a lot of choices when it comes to smartphones from premium ones to budget devices. Flagship smartphones have come a long way and still has a lot of consumers who want to pay more for a worthy device that can last them for some years.

On the other hand, affordable smartphones with great specs are being loved by a lot of consumers and research says people these days are now turning their way the towards so-called β€˜affordable premium’ devices, at whose price the previous flagships were sold.

Samsung Galaxy A series are being sold more than its flagships

A recentΒ report from Counterpoint Research on the South Korean smartphone market explains this affordable premium smartphone game in details. Being a South Korean company Samsung smartphones like Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note seriesΒ have been the top-selling devices in the country for quite sometime.

But the Q1 2020 Counterpoint Research smartphone sales tracker for South Korea changes the concept and brings us what consumers now think when they buy a smartphone.

The top-selling smartphone last Q1 2019 was the Galaxy Note 9 whose ASP (Average Selling Price) was $917 whereas, in Q1 2020, the top-selling device is the Galaxy A90 5G whose ASP is just $453, this itself says a lot. There are flagships too in the top 5 but only 2 compared to 4 last year.

The second most-selling Samsung phone this year is the Galaxy Note 10 5G with an ASP of $941 wile the 5th belongs Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G with $1,092 ASP. The only two proper Samsung flagships that were hugely sold in South Korea this Q1 2020.

Apart from them, all were Samsung’s Galaxy A series of smartphones which translates the fact people are opting more for the mid-range smartphones or the affordable premium smartphones.

Gone are the days, when people had too pay a lot for good cameras, design or performance and even battery. These more or else every budget smartphone pack great features that are adequate for any other people, while anyone who like a ‘a bit extra’ would most likely opt for an affordable premium smartphone.

Obviously, there are tech-savvy people who demand flagships, but yes, there’s no denial of the fact that as smartphones are becoming better every day, high priced smartphones seem less appealing for masses. This trend has been observed since 2018 when both Samsung’s Galaxy S and Note series gave up their shares to the entry-level and mid-range smartphones.

Interestingly, in the graphs we also notice that the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones sold in South Korea did increase steadily till last year, but has declined in Q1 2020 for the first time ever, not to forget the global pandemic that is also blamed for a decline in the smartphone market.

Premium smartphone prices have increased significantly since a couple of years which gave rise to a new range i.e. the affordable premium range of smartphones. This trend in South Korea is not only refined to a country but to the world smartphone market eventually.

In days to come, we’ll see how the market fluctuates and how it shapes up… What are your thoughts? Tell us in the comments, would you buy a premium smartphone or go for an affordable premium offering?

Previously some reports claimed that the X50 Pro was listed alongside aΒ 48MP Sony IMX598 camera module, instead of the newΒ Samsung 50MP ISOCELL GN1Β sensor, that Vivo already teased in one of itsΒ promos. Turns out, the Samsung GN1 will be reserved for the X50 Pro+ model. This is the only twist we came to know from this recently leaked image.

The Vivo X50 Pro+ features a Snapdragon 865 chipset and a 50MP main camera. The source also claims that the X50 Pro+ will come with a 120Hz HDR10+ OLED display. It will be powered with a 4315mAh huge battery along with the help of a faster-charging speed of 44W.

The Vivo X50 Pro is priced at CNY 3998 ($560/€505), according to this picture, and the prices of the other two models have not been revealed in this image. Google postponed the launch of Android 11 and promised to come soon

Android 11 will be the next android version we will get to see on our mobile platforms soon. Most of the present-day smartphones run on Android 10 Oreo. According to Google’s Android Developers, Android 11 is still in development and there is some delay this time with the launch. The Google I/O was canceled due to COVID-19 and it was anticipated that the launch of the next Android version will be done at that event.

Later on the launch date of Android 11 with its official logo was reported to be on June 1, which again got postponed to 3rd June by the company itself. But again yesterday Android Developers announced that we have to wait for the Android 11 launch as the previous launch date has again been postponed. They have not mentioned any particular date for the event, but we have anticipated that it will be launched within July or August or to the earliest it can be the end of June.

The launch event has been postponed officially and this decision should be respected as the company can frame a better angle and exposure for its products to launch and showcase at the same time. The ongoing tension in Oakland, Los Angeles seems to be playing a major part in the delay of the launch. As of now, we can expect that the 11th version is yet not ready for the customers to take a hand on but as promised by the company it will be available in Q3 and it is also trying to make it sooner than possible.

Google earlier this month had released the fourth Android 11 developer preview for Pixel phones and meant to end its developer preview releases in April and start with beta releases in May, but that has been now again been postponed. The tech giant has delayed the launch of Android 11 beta updates to June as protests have spread across the United States over the killing of George Floyd, a Minneapolis black man who died after being pinned by the neck under a white police officer’s knee. This becoming one of the main reasons for the company to release such an amazing up-gradation in such a crucial moment.

MSI officially confirms AMD Zen 3 support on its B450 & X470 motherboards

0

When there has been a lot of debate regarding the AMD Zen 3 architecture support on the existing B450 & X470 motherboards, AMD was almost forced to retain support for its upcoming Ryzen 4000 CPUs on its existing 400 series motherboards.

MSI has confirmed that its existing 400-series motherboards will be compatible with AMD’s Zen 3 architecture.Β In a recent video by MSI posted onΒ YouTube, theΒ representatives did state the support for the upcoming architecture would be done via an optional beta BIOS update.

MSI officially confirms AMD Zen 3 support on its B450 & X470 motherboards

However, this process will selective, meaning you must check whether your MSI motherboard shall support or not. Both of its MAX and non-MAX motherboards will do support the BIOS update.

While MSI claims that they see no problems with bringing Zen 3 support to their MAX motherboards because of the 32 MB BIOSes. On the other hand, the problem arises with the 16 MB BIOSes of the non-MAX motherboards.

To tackle this, MSI will be stripping back the features of non-MAX motherboards by dropping support for older CPUs but MSI has not clarified which CPUs will be affected in this process. But overall, if you do own an X470 or B450 motherboard by MSI then you can easily upgrade to AMD’s upcoming CPUs without much hassle.

So, in India, a new public-private initiative called β€˜Suraksha’ has been introduced.Β

Xiaomi and Samsung retail stores receive Suraksha certification in India

All of the retail stores or shops will have to be registered for the Suraksha certification, after which the staff and people working will be educated and given extensive training on how to actually operate safely. After this training, the shops will again be assed and after attaining satisfactory results, they will be given their Suraksha certification.

As Xiaomi and Samsung, the two biggest smartphone brands in India, are making their stores comply with new norms to ensure public safety. BigBasket Mobile App to feature a dedicated Voice Assistant

The online deliveries got relaxation earlier this month. So, the green stuff delivering platforms like BigBasket is coming to the field again. Some are also bringing improvements with them. BigBasket is one of them. It includes a voice assistant to its mobile app.

No doubt, they are very much focused to make their app more user friendly and they should be. The new addition not only takes voice inputs but also speaks out feedbacks. You can find a round-shaped floating button at the bottom right of the app screen labeled with ‘Talk’. You need to tap on it to activate.

BigBasket-Voice-Search-1_TechnoSports.co.in

The BigBasket app had the google voice typing feature included before. Now, they are trying something better. The partnership with Slang Lab, an Indian Startup, just makes it done.

By activating the voice assistant you can search for the items. But you can’t add them to the basket by only saying it. You have to do it yourself manually. After taking all items you need to the basket, you can directly jump to the check out page by commanding to the assistant. Pretty much handy, right?

BigBasket-Voice-Search-2_TechnoSports.co.in

At present, the assistant can communicate in five languages and those are English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. The searching algorithm is good enough. Using this feature, in the future, the company can analyze how its users are searching in the app and which product. The data will help to improve users’ app experience further too.

ASUS India rides high with a 15% market share in the Consumer Notebook Segment in Q1 2020

0

Asus India has made a decent progress in the country competing against the likes of Lenovo, HP, Acer and Dell. With its recent laptops in the gaming as well as premium laptops, has made it a great choice for consumers and professionals.

Also, their budget laptops are quite ‘value-for-money’ ones and undoubtedly, their Vivobook series of laptops have helped to attract more buyers in the past few years. With agressive pricing and partnering with online retailers like Flipkart and Paytm Mall has helped the brand to spread across the nation.

According to their recent press release, the company claims to have capture 15% of the market share in the ConsumerΒ NotebookΒ Segment in Q1 2020 itself. This is significant because the market has been affected with the likes of COVID-19 which in turn has paved the way for the work-from-home culture which in turn has led to an increase in demand for laptops.

ASUS ROG gaming laptops with 9th gen Intel CPUs & NVIDIA RTX graphics launched in India

Their key points include:

  • WorkΒ FromΒ Home mandate fuels the demand for ASUS’ Thin & Light and Gaming laptopsΒ Β
  • Post-COVIDΒ -19Β lockdown relaxation, ASUS has successfully recoveredΒ more than 90% ofΒ itsΒ national sales as compared to the pre-lockdown phaseΒ
  • Extensive retail expansion plans toΒ capture offline opportunities by establishing 200 stores by the end of 2020Β Β

Interestingly, the Taiwanese giant aims to to be among the top 3 Laptop Brands by end of 2020 which is achievable if they continue to aggressively price their products and target its audience more specifically. Their Zenbook, Vivobook, TUF, ROG gaming laptop series have been received well by the consumers which has helped build a trust among its consumers.

So here’s Asus’s recent press release:

New Delhi, May 27, 2020: While the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown has disrupted the growth trajectories of brands across industries, ASUS India has defied the prevalent norms and registered exceptional growth during this period. Recent data by IDC has revealed that ASUS has garnered 15% market share in the consumer notebook segment as of Q1 2020. The brand has witnessed a 40% jump in sales in Q1 2020 as compared to Q4 2019. While the overall laptop consumer market in India declined by almost 26.5% in Q1 2020 as compared to Q4 2019, this comes as a remarkable feat for ASUS.

In the weeks following the sequential relaxation of the lockdown, ASUS has successfully recovered more than 90% of its national sales as compared to pre-COVID 19 phases. Driving this hyper-growth is the increasing demand for high-quality, feature-rich laptops to support the work/study-at-home mandate, bolstered by the rising penchant for online gaming while individuals practice social distancing at home. In line with these trends, ASUS has seen a steady rise in the demand for its ROG and Thin & Light laptop segments.

Speaking on the developments, Arnold Su, Business Head, Consumer & Gaming PC, System Business Group, ASUS India said, β€œIndia has always been an important market for ASUS hence investments and growth strategies have been in sync. Our efforts have always been to expand our base and reach out to as many people possible to make technologically advanced and affordable laptops available to them.”

β€œPost the lockdown has been relaxed in some geographies the pickup pace of our products has been phenomenal, so much so that we expect sales to surpass average sales in the coming weeks. It is heartening to see our brand playing a key role in ensuring smooth work/study-at-home and enthralling gaming experiences for individuals during this challenging situation.”

ASUS aims to cross the 20% market share by the end of Q3 and a lofty 23%-25% by the end of Q4 2020. To continue this growth trajectory, ASUS is set to launch an array of new products while expanding its offline presence from 100 stores to 200 stores by the end of 2020. With concerted efforts in terms of enhancing its product portfolio and refining consumer experience, ASUS aims to emerge among the top 3 brands in the consumer laptop segment by the end of 2020.

Xbox Series X can add HDR support & increase framerates for Old Games

The upcoming Xbox Series X supports the games from its previous generation Xboxes i.e. Xbox One, Xbox 360, and the generation one Xbox. This is informed by the company earlier. Now they informed the implementation of technologies that automatically add HDR support and increases the frame rate too.

Xbox-Series-X-1_TechnoSports.co.in

The Partner Project Management Director of Xbox Team Road, Jason Ronald said, “Through collaboration with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X provides a new and innovative HDR reconstruction technology that allows the platform to automatically add HDR support to games.”

The new technology is so much innovative that it does its job by itself so that no impact falls to the game. It also can be implemented to the games of the previous Xbox versions. Ronald added, “Because the platform handles the technology itself, we can enable HDR with zero impact on game performance. We can also apply it to Xbox 360 and the original Xbox games which are nearly 20 years old. Long before HDR exists.”

Xbox-Series-X-3_TechnoSports.co.in

Rather than adding the HDR support automatically, the team also invented a new technology that has the ability to run old games in higher resolution and also can increase the frame rate. Though this technology can’t be applicable for all games, it’s limited. If your favorite game comes to the list, the frame rate will be hiked up to 60fps if it had 30fps or to 120fps if it had 60fps.

Lastly, Microsoft also revealed a quick recovery feature which helps the player to switch between multiple games quickly.
