“Mantis”: The Kill Boksoon Spin-off That’s About to Redefine Korean Action Cinema

Netflix is about to drop another explosive Korean thriller that has fans of “Kill Boksoon” on the edge of their seats. “Mantis,” a spin-off set in the same universe as Kill Boksoon, will land on Netflix on 26 September, bringing together three powerhouse actors in what promises to be an intricate web of assassin relationships.

Mantis Meet the Star-Studded Cast

What Makes “Mantis” Special?

Unlike typical action spin-offs that feel like cash grabs, “Mantis” brings a fresh perspective to the Kill Boksoon universe. The story follows Mantis, an ace assassin who returns to the contract killer industry after a hiatus, encountering his trainee friend Jae-yi and a retired legendary killer Dok-go.

The genius lies in the character dynamics. Director Lee Tae-sung has crafted a narrative where past relationships collide with present ambitions, creating the perfect storm for both emotional depth and explosive action sequences.

The Complex Web of Relationships

Mantis vs. Jae-yi: From Partners to Rivals

The heart of the film beats around the complicated relationship between Mantis (Yim Si Wan) and Jae-yi (Park Gyu Young). As former training partners turned rivals, their reunion promises to be anything but friendly. This dynamic adds layers beyond typical action fare, exploring themes of loyalty, betrayal, and professional competition.

Dok-go: The Mentor’s Return

Jo Woo Jin’s Dok-go represents the old guard trying to reclaim control. After Cha Min-Kyu’s death, he returns to take over MK Enterprise and tries to lure Mantis back to the company. This mentor-student relationship adds gravitas to the action, promising emotional stakes alongside the physical ones.

Why This Cast is Perfect

Yim Si Wan brings his incredible range from dramatic roles in Misaeng to his recent villainous turn in Squid Game. His ability to convey vulnerability beneath a hardened exterior makes him ideal for an assassin grappling with his past.

Park Gyu Young has proven her versatility across genres, from horror in Sweet Home to romance dramas. Her portrayal of Jae-yi as both ally and antagonist promises to be a standout performance.

Jo Woo Jin, a veteran character actor, brings gravitas to every role. His Dok-go will likely serve as the emotional anchor of the film, representing the cost of a life spent in violence.

Production Timeline and Netflix Strategy

Filming began on August 1st, 2024, and concluded by December 20th, 2024, indicating a tight production schedule that suggests Netflix’s confidence in the project. The streaming giant has been doubling down on Korean content, and Mantis represents their commitment to expanding successful franchises.

The September 2025 release date positions Mantis perfectly for award season consideration while capitalizing on the continued global appetite for Korean action thrillers.

What to Expect from the Action Sequences

If Kill Boksoon set the bar high with its choreographed violence, Mantis aims to leap over it entirely. The focus on intricate relationships suggests the action will be more personal, more brutal, and more emotionally charged.

The film promises to explore the psychological toll of the assassin lifestyle while delivering the kinetic energy that made the original a global hit.

Building on Kill Boksoon’s Success

The original Kill Boksoon struck gold by balancing family drama with high-octane action. Mantis takes a different approach, focusing on professional relationships within the killer-for-hire industry. This shift allows for deeper exploration of the world’s mythology while maintaining the visceral thrills fans expect.

The decision to bring back Jeon Do-yeon in some capacity creates continuity while allowing new characters to shine in their own light.
