Imagine a mining site where the roar of diesel engines is replaced by the hum of electric motors. This isn’t science fiction; it’s the near future for Fortescue Metals Group. The company recently announced plans to deploy electric heavy-duty trucks in its Western Australian iron ore operations, targeting a significant reduction in fuel costs and environmental impact. This move marks a pivotal moment in the electrification of heavy industry, with Fortescue betting big on sustainability and efficiency.

Electric heavy-duty: The Problem: Diesel’s Mammoth Fuel Bill

The sheer scale of mining operations means colossal fuel consumption. For companies like Fortescue, which operate vast fleets of heavy-duty trucks, diesel fuel represents a substantial and volatile operating expense.

Historically, the perceived limitations of electric powertrains in terms of power, range, and charging infrastructure made a transition seem distant, if not impossible, for these demanding applications. The constant need to refuel, the associated emissions, and the fluctuating global fuel prices create a persistent headache for operational budgets and environmental targets. That said, electric heavy-duty is worth examining closely here.

Fortescue’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 underscores the urgency of this challenge. Not everyone is convinced that current battery technology can reliably power mining trucks for an entire shift.

Critics argue that charging times could cripple productivity. However, the specific demands of mining—often involving fixed routes and predictable operational cycles—present a unique opportunity for electrification that differs from, say, long-haul trucking. This controlled environment allows for strategic charging solutions and optimized operational planning.

The Solution: Komatsu’s Electric Powerhouse

Fortescue is placing its faith in Komatsu, a leader in mining equipment, to deliver the solution. By Q3 2027, the company plans to deploy Komatsu’s EH500E-AC electric heavy-duty trucks. These aren’t your average electric vehicles; they are purpose-built giants. Each truck is powered by a formidable 1,200 kW electric motor, delivering an immense 7,500 Nm of torque. This colossal power is essential for hauling massive loads of ore across challenging mine terrains.

The operational range is slated for 300 km per charge under typical mining conditions, which is more than sufficient for many fixed haulage routes within a mine. While acceleration figures from 0-100 km/h are still [UNCONFIRMED] at approximately 25 seconds, the focus here is on sustained, powerful hauling rather than rapid sprints.

The real story is the potential for massive savings. Fortescue aims to slash diesel fuel consumption by up to 90%, projecting annual savings exceeding $50 million. This aggressive target highlights the economic incentive driving this technological shift.

Fortescue targets over 90% diesel reduction, aiming for $50 million+ annual savings with Komatsu electric trucks.
