UltraTech Is Putting 600 Electric Trucks On The Road To Cut Its Diesel Habit

Cement and sustainability don’t usually share a headline, but UltraTech is making a case for why they should. The company has announced it will scale its electric truck fleet to 600+ heavy-duty vehicles by December 2026, marking one of the largest EV logistics rollouts in Indian industry so far.

UltraTech, part of the Aditya Birla Group and the world’s largest cement company by capacity outside China, has signed service contracts with major EV manufacturers — including Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion, and Sany — to deploy the fleet across seven states. It’s not a pilot project; it’s a full operational shift covering roughly five million metric tonnes of clinker and other materials annually.

Why This Isn’t Just A PR Number

The 1,17,000-tonne CO₂ reduction figure sounds abstract until you convert it — that’s the equivalent of taking tens of thousands of passenger cars off the road for a year. And the 39 million litres of diesel being displaced isn’t a rounding error either; it reflects UltraTech’s actual freight volume across some of India’s most cement-intensive states.

MD K C Jhanwar framed the move as extending decarbonization beyond the factory floor and into the supply chain itself — arguably the harder part to green, since long-haul freight has historically resisted electrification due to range and charging infrastructure limits. UltraTech’s bet is that heavy-duty EV trucks have matured enough to handle sustained mine-to-plant and inter-plant hauls at scale.

This isn’t UltraTech’s first green logistics move either — the company introduced CNG trucks back in 2021 and electric trucks in 2024, positioning itself as the first cement company to run heavy-duty EVs for long-haul transport in India.
