Asus Zenfone Max M1 detailed review: Worth buying at Rs.7,499?

Looking for a solid smartphone on a budget? You should go for the ASUS Zenfone Max M1 at Rs.7,499 after reading our detailed review on it

ASUS recently launched its budget end smartphone Zenfone Max M1 at Rs.7,499. What has made this smartphone so special is its solid offerings at the budget smartphone?

In our daily lives, we always look for a smartphone that has enough RAM to handle all our apps efficiently, decent enough processor, and a great battery life.

When we have a budget of around Rs.7,000, we cannot expect a smartphone to have a mind-blowing camera. But, it’s boon to us if we get a good camera.

Keeping all these things in mind, and on basis of user interests, we decided to do a detailed review of the ASUS Zenfone Max M1.

Before our thoughts, let’s give a quick overview of the specs of this smartphone:

Honestly speaking, I was surprised when I started reviewing this smartphone. Here’s what I have dug out after using it for 15 days:

Display

The first main feature of the smartphone that you’ll notice is its HD+ display. It has a 5.45 inch HD+ IPS display with 18:9 aspect ratio that seems sharp and vivid. Though it does not has the best viewing angle, but for a budget smartphone, it is ok.

The 2.5D glass around the corners makes the screen look cool as well. The screen seems to be bright enough with 400 nits of max brightness.

Design

The smartphone is a sturdy one that feels good when you hold in your hand, and it is much like its brother Zenfone Max Pro M1. The build quality is great, though it’s not stylish its a decent one. Because of the metallic finish and unibody design, it feels quite premium as well.

Performance

When it comes to performance, you get the real benefit of having the 3GB RAM. Housed by an old but good enough Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor, day-to-day tasks seems buttery smooth.

Well, it does lack the Snapdragon 450 as you see in Realme C1 or the Helio P22 in Redmi 6, but at Rs.7,499 it does a pretty good job. The 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage help you boost your daily performance.

An octa-core processor with 3GB RAM helps you do play games like FIFA Mobile, Clash Royale and even PUBG Mobile at low settings.

Camera

The surprise element of this smartphone is the camera, as because at Rs.7,499 this packs some awesome rear as well as front cameras. The Zenfone Max M1 packs a “too common” 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, so it takes a lot of light and details as well.

I was surprised to see that this smartphone captures a great portrait shot through its single lens using software optimizations. The daylights shots are absolutely great while night shots look promising as well. The colours in the pics seem natural and bright. Here are some of the sample shots:

Overall it has a great rear camera compared to its price. You can even record 1080p videos with this smartphone with great details and colours.

The 8MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture to looks fair enough, and you also get modes like Beauty, Portrait, Selfie Panorama, GIF Animation.

Battery

The feature that stands out for the smartphone is its insane 4000mAh battery that lasts much longer mostly because of its clean UI. It can easily last for 1-2 days with normal usage and even more with lesser use. It does not support fast charge but gets fully charged by 2-3 hours.

Software & other features

The feature I felt the best about the smartphone is its clean UI. ASUS’s own Zen UI 5.0 on top of Android Oreo 8.0 is very light and fast, making the smartphone much more efficient.

Interestingly the smartphone features both the Face Unlock and Fingerprint Sensor. Both seems fast and accurate but face unlock takes a few milliseconds more time than the fingerprint sensor.

So, having listed all our views, one thing that is clear is that this smartphone packs in some serious features that are hard to find in the price range. It is a solid smartphone with modern amenities and has some great looks. Here are the pros and cons of the smartphone:

English Premier League approves the use of VAR from next season

English Premier League clubs have voted in favour of introducing Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to the competition from next season.

English Premier League is the only major European league not to make use of Video Assistant Referees. VAR has already been implemented in France, Spain, Germany and Italy.

The vote was held at a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday. The clubs reached an agreement. It will see the English top flight, join the UEFA Champions League in introducing video technology at the start of the 2019-20 campaign. “Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) to the competition in the 2019/20 season. ” a statement on the league’s website read.

“At a Shareholders’ Meeting today, clubs were provided with an update on the non-live VAR trials being undertaken by the League and Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) this season. Key learnings from VAR’s use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and other leagues across the world, were discussed in detail. The Premier League’s non-live testing programme will remain in place for the rest of this season. Along with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently. And developing a clear protocol for communicating VAR decisions to fans. The League will now formally make a request to the International Football Association Board and FIFA to use VAR next season.”

The news comes less than a week after Southampton manager Mark Hughes said the Premier League is “still in the dark ages” because of its delay in adopting VAR. The Saints boss was complaining after striker Charlie Austin had a goal disallowed against Watford. This prompted the forward to hit out at officials in an interview after the game.

“It’s ridiculous. Watford shouldn’t be in the game. We scored a perfectly good goal that was ruled out for offside. ” he said. “The officials cost us two points. They said it was offside; that is a joke. People go on about VAR. They [the referees] clearly need help. If this is the best, most-watched league in the world then give them all the help they need. It is a joke.”

UEFA Nations League : Promotions, Relegations and the Finals

The UEFA Nations League group stage is nearing its conclusion. But which teams can still be promoted, relegated or reach the finals? Lets have a look.

The UEFA Nations League involves promotion and relegation as well as the chance to reach the UEFA EURO 2020 play-offs and, from League A, June’s knockout finals. The race to earn promotion to the league above or even qualify for the finals – all while avoiding the drop to the tier below – is beginning to hot up ahead of next month’s last batch of group games.

Germany are in danger of suffering relegation as the inaugural Nations League nears the conclusion of the tournament’s opening phase. With the last fixtures set to be played over the next few days, teams will be seeking to round off their campaigns on a high with plenty still to be decided. All four places in the Nations League finals remain up for grabs, while only two teams have been promoted (Georgia and Ukraine) or relegated (Iceland and Poland) so far.

Race for the finals :

A trophy is up for grabs at the end of the first Nations League cycle, with four teams set to compete in semi-finals and a final at the end of the 2018-19 European club season.

Group 1 :

World Cup winners France lead the way in Group 1 with seven points from three games, but Netherlands can overhaul them with two wins in their remaining fixtures. A draw in Rotterdam on Friday would send France to the finals, though.

Group 2 :

Belgium or Switzerland will emerge as the winners of Group 2, with a straight shoot-out between the two for the final berth. Switzerland must win by two clear goals to guarantee their progression, while Belgium only need to be victorious.

Group 3 :

Portugal top Group 3 and only need a draw in Italy on Saturday while Roberto Mancini’s men must beat the Euro 2016 champions and hope they do not take three points against Poland.

Group 4 :

Despite losing at home to England last month, Spain remain frontrunners in Group 4 with victory in Croatia on Thursday enough to send them through to the finals at England’s expense.

As the match ended, the red and gold brigade leaves the salt lake stadium with a 2-1 loss against the away team Chennai city fc.This was their first defeat in the Hero I league 2018-19.

The game was tight, as both the teams created many chances throughout the match. Chennai City fc scored the first goal from an inch perfect free kick by Felipe near the end of first half.

But East-Bengal came back strongly in the second half as they found an equaliser from Enrique Esqueda in the 52nd minute.

The rest of the match showcased some unnecessary fouls and cards. Three East-Bengal players were booked for rough challenges which the coach would have to deal with in the next match.

Near the end of the match, in the 86th minute a Chennai City player was fouled inside the box by the goalkeeper. N.Gordillo scored from the penalty kick to find City an important win over the Kolkata side.

Santiago Solari became the first Real Madrid head coach to win his first four games in charge for nine years.

Santiago Solari continued his perfect winning run to earn the Real Madrid job on a permanent basis. He guided the Los Blancos to a 4-2 LaLiga win at Celta Vigo on Sunday. That entertaining victory means the Argentine is the first Madrid coach to win his first four competitive games in charge since Manuel Pellegrini in 2009. The former winger has steadied the ship following Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal last month. That boosted his chances of landing the role permanently with his temporary spell now at an end.

Real Madrid have submitted documentation to make Santiago Solari their first team coach on a permanent basis. The former midfielder took over the club at the end of October. He replaced Julen Lopetegui. Madrid have since won four games in a row under Solari. They have now given him a permanent contract.It has been sent to the Spanish FA (RFEF).

But the loss of another defender will be a big blow for the new head head coach Santiago Solari. Marcelo, Raphael Varane, Dani Carvajal and Jesus Vallejo are also still out of commission. However, Solari will hope to have Isco back to full fitness. He underwent an operation to treat acute appendicitis in September.

Real Madrid confirmed defender Nacho Fernandez has suffered a ligament injury to his right knee in the 4-2 win at Celta Vigo on Sunday. While Casemiro sprained his right ankle. The club have not provided a timetable for the recovery of either player but reports in Spain suggest Nacho is facing two months out and Casemiro will be sidelined for a minimum of three weeks.

AMD’s 7nm EPYC Rome processors to bring revolution

Silicon industry giant AMD announces its new 7nm EPYC Rome processors based on Zen 2 architecture that comes with 64 cores and 128 threads

As we discussed in our previous post regarding AMD’s launches in their “Next Horizon” event, they are the first company to launch both the 7nm CPU and GPU together. So, in this post, we will discuss more the new 7nm EPYC Rome CPUs based on the new Zen 2 architecture.

These are high performing server-side mainstream processors. AMD is targeting the Global industries which need high-end desktops for their customers. From cloud service providers to web servers and OEMs, everyone is in need of a high performing secured processors keeping in mind of the future.

So, the new EPYC Rome processors based on 7nm micro-architecture is the perfect one to upgrade with. It is fast, secure, uses AI and machine learning for better performance. This is named “EPYC” as in the fact stands that the Xeon processors do fail to outperform it.

So, let’s discuss all the major announcements by AMD in details:

The Zen 2 architecture

AMD’s EPYC Roadmap started with the Naples based on 14nm Zen architecture. The newer Rome is based on Zen 2 architecture which is the same architecture that will be soon seen in Ryzen 3 and ThreadRipper processors.

The Zen 2 architecture is significantly more important because, in this one, the compute cores will be shrunk to 7nm size. Yes, say goodbye to the old 14nm, 12nm size microprocessors!

Mark Papermaster, chief technology officer at AMD, spoke in detail about the new 7nm Zen 2 core and their partnership with TMSC, who will be manufacturing the new Zen 2 based processors.

These new chips have gone through a huge investment upfront both by AMD and TSMC. It is notable to mention that AMD’s primary manufacturing partner, Global Foundries, stepped out of the 7nm race earlier this year. Still, AMD has remained committed to delivering the new Zen 2 microarchitecture to market.

Mark claims of doubling of core density and halving of power consumption for the same performance using a 7nm microarchitecture. This potentially indicates the fact that we’ll see increased core counts in future from their CPUs.

He has also claimed that Zen 2 will offer a 1.2x performance boost in IPC over current Zen+ based CPUs by using the second generation Infinity Fabric.

The Zen 2 will provide up to:

2X the compute power per node,
improved execution pipeline,
doubled core density, and
will use half the energy per operation.

AMD has even doubled the floating point performance with the Zen 2 microarchitecture.

AMD EPYC Rome processors

EPYC Rome processors are very much special for AMD. Previously its CEO Dr Lisa Su mentioned in an interview that, they want to target all the three sectors of usage of CPUs. From home to professional level and now server side, all of these under one roof.

As AMD’s stock is increasing day by day, they have thought its the right time to beat the industry leader Intel in the data centre and server-side sectors.

Fabricating 7nm processors was not an easy task for them, but still, they have managed. Intel is still struggling to shift to 10nm, and AMD has done and will launch its products in the first quarter of 2019.

The detailed architecture of EPYC Rome processors

The EPYC server line-up, codenamed as Rome, scales up to 64 cores and 128 threads. Now, this will help AMD’s enterprise customers to equip a single dual-socket motherboard with up to 128 cores and 256 threads. Rome is also the first PCIe 4.0 compatible CPU, that offers double the bandwidth per channel.

They feature a new and revolutionary “chiplet” ecosystem. In this, we see a 14nm I/O die that sits at the centre of the processor and has been surrounded by four 7nm CPU chiplet modules on each side.

These chiplets are interconnected with the I/O die via AMD’s second generation Infinity Fabric architecture as we discussed before. Each of the chiplet carries up to 8 cores and 16 threads.

The EPYC ‘Rome’ server-end processors will be equipped with an eight-channel DDR4 memory controller, which has been housed inside the I/O die which present in the centre. This improved design will help each chiplet to access the memory with equal latency. The multiple cores have an support to 4TB of DDR4 memory per socket.

Being the first processors to support the PCIe 4.0 standard, they have support up to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes. This makes the EPYC Rome processors an ideal companion for AMD’s recently announced Instinct MI60 and MI50 GPU accelerators that utilize the PCIe 4.0 x16 interface.

The next Milan chips based on Zen 3 architecture is also on its way and is in the developing phase. On the other hand, AMD also assured that the Zen 4 architecture is in its designing stage, which shows their supremacy in the coming days.

Performance gain

A significant change that you get when processors get upgraded is in its IPC or instructions per clock. The amount of increase in this IPC determines how much performance increase you can expect from a processor.

AMD has delivered an impressive 52 per cent jump in IPC for its server and client processors than its older Opteron chips. AMD claims that there is a 29 per cent jump in IPC from the “Zen” cores used in the Naples EPYC chips to the “Zen 2” cores used in the Rome chips.

Shifting from 14nm to 7nm would allow a chip to have twice the transistor density at half the power consumption. This will help to deliver about a 25 per cent performance boost in the performance of those transistors at the same time.

The Rome chips will feature an improved branch predictor, better instruction pre-fetching, a larger op cache, and a re-optimized instruction cache.

The width of the floating point units has been doubled to 256 bits, including the floating point registers which are also doubled up in size to 256 bits. The memory bandwidth into and out of the load/store units has also been doubled with 256-bit data paths.

To cut it short, with twice as many cores and vector units that are twice as wide, floating point performance on Rome CPUs will be 4X that of Naples, and integer performance will be increased by 2X.

Benchmarks

Words are just not enough to prove the power and performance. So, Dr Lisa Su put to ResNet-50 image recognition benchmark test a “Vega 20” GPU accelerator probably the MI60 paired with the Rome EPYC processor against a single Naples EPYC 7601 processor with a Radeon Instinct MI25 accelerator. The Rome ran twice as fast its predecessor, which is just unbelievable.

“I have been in the semiconductor business a long time and you just don’t get 2X generational performance enhancements,” AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su said with a laugh.

AMD compared a single-socket 64 cores Rome EPYC processor with two-socket 28 cores Intel “Skylake” Xeon SP-8180M, which is Intel’s current best server end desktop processor, and also with two-socket 32-cores Naples EPYC 7601 processor.

The C-RAY ray tracing benchmark resulted in the Skylake machine to do the various renderings in 30.4 seconds, the Rome machine to do it in 27.1 seconds, and the Naples machine did it in 28.4 seconds.

To be simple, the new Rome processors have tremendous power, enough that its single core is enough to beat Intel Xeon’s 2 cores or AMD’s one-year-old Naples EPYC’s 2 cores. This makes the Rome processors “EPYC” and the best, currently in the market.

To wrap things up…

The clear advantage goes to Rome EPYC processor, especially if you consider the two of those Intel Xeon Skylake list which cost over $26,000.

Though AMD has not declared the exact price of the Rome EPYC processors, as the Naples EPYC 7601 processor is priced near about $4,200, so the Rome processors will absolutely be lesser than that of Intel’s server-end ones.

With this, we can conclude that at lower prices we can get superior end performance for the new server-end CPUs by AMD.

Being future-proof, as the same socket is compatible with the new Rome processors as well as old Naples processors, industries can easily switch to newer and better processors up till the Milan and future Zen 4 architecture based server-end CPUs from AMD.

AMD announces new 7nm EPYC Rome processors based on Zen 2 architecture as well the new 7nm MI60 GPUs based on “Vega-20” Radeon GPU architecture in its Next Horizon Event

After a long wait, finally, AMD has revealed its new EPYC Rome processors yesterday. At AMD’s Next Horizon Event, they have announced world’s first 7nm chipset that’s particularly designed for server platforms.

The Zen 2 micro-architecture has been very special to the company as because the EPYC processors have got a huge jump, directly from 14 nm Naples to the 7nm Rome. Also, this Rome architecture is very significant to connect the bridge between the Naples to the future Milan EPYC processors which are based on the “Zen 3 architecture”.

Interestingly, it’s for the first time the new server processors will out beat the Xeon dominated server end microprocessors. At the same event, AMD showcased their new 7nm Vega-20 Radeon GPUs that will be first installed in the Radeon Instinct MI60 GPU accelerators.

This event is clearly a “Next Horizon” for AMD, as because AMD from now on can alone compete both the giants Intel and NVIDIA with their own CPUs and GPUs.

AMD CEO DR. Lisu Su presented the keynote at the event. She stressed on AMD’s focus on data centres, cloud computing and server end processors and GPUs. She discussed many of the key roles that these processors will be used for, such as workloads in HPC, cloud, hyperscale, and virtualization environments.

AMD looks forward to the data centre industry as a $29 billion opportunity by 2021. GPUs will be playing a larger role as the industry shifts to artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads.
