The Doctor Strange-in-disguise theory just hit a plot twist of its own. A concept artist says Doctor Doom’s mysterious second-in-command, nicknamed “Boris,” was removed from Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything, so treat this as a rumour.

What Sparked This?

Molinam shared Magic: The Gathering art showing Doom standing before his Latverian throne with three witches and a masked fourth figure. Fans quickly guessed the mask hides Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Asked who the fourth figure was, Molinam replied that he didn’t remember the name but the character “was removed from the film.”

Why Take It With Salt?

  • Mixed signals: only one version of the art included the masked ally. The others left his spot empty.
  • Possible cover-up: Molinam may be protecting a secret, or Marvel may have told artists the character was cut.
  • Marvel keeps teasing: Robert Downey Jr. wore an Easter egg-filled outfit in an Avengers: Endgame Encore promo that seemed to reference Boris.

The Strange Connection

The theory has real comic-book roots. In the 2015 Secret Wars storyline, Strange became Doom’s sheriff and number two on Battleworld. The MCU is adapting that saga.

Cumberbatch’s own comments have been a rollercoaster:

  • He first said Strange wasn’t in Doomsday because the character was “not aligning with this part of the story.”
  • A week later, he said he “got that wrong” and was “in the next one.”
  • He also joked “Don’t ever believe anything I say,” and he was absent from the film’s March 2025 cast announcement.

What Might Really Be Happening?

One theory is that Marvel is saving Strange’s Battleworld sheriff role for Secret Wars. Cumberbatch said he’s “in a lot” of that film. Cutting Boris could also keep Doomsday from getting overcrowded, since the three Latverian witches already fill the sorcerer-ally slot.
