Design & Build Quality:

The Charging Case comes with an oval-shaped matt finish texture that feels premium from the very first touch. There is a boAt branding on the top, a hidden tri-color LED at the front for charging, and battery level indications. The MicroUSB port is placed at the back. A short model description is also there at the back surface.

Each of the earbuds is also shaped almost a look-alike of the charging case, in terms of design, but obviously in a smaller size. There are also hidden LEDs in the Multifunction Buttons. The mics are placed at the bottom of each one (The bottom part you get after wearing).

The build quality is great and the matt finish on its top enhances the premium feel further. Holding it in the hands is very comfortable and gives a premium feel as well.

boAt Airdopes 171 Review 1_TechnoSports.co.in

Comfort & Usage:

The buds are very light in weight and fit perfectly, not tight but keep steady at their proper place even after getting a good jerk. I used the buds over 4 to 5 hours long and didn’t feel uncomfortable for a single time. The charging case size is enough to carry in your pocket easily and can tolerate little pressures, thanks to the build quality.

boAt is providing Bluetooth 5.0 with this product. So, fast connectivity is quite obvious. For the first time, you have to pair it with your smartphone or PC or Tab. Generally, when you will take out the buds from the case, they will turn on automatically. But I had to turn those on manually once.

The user manual says the Airdopes 171 has a transmission range of 10 meters but it disconnected after 2.5 meters only. Within that range, everything is well and good.

Along with all these, the voice assistant support will make your hands-free experience a lot better. If you are wondering about the latency, let you know it’s very less.

boAt Airdopes 171 Review 4_TechnoSports.co.in

Audio Quality:

Now the most important part started. Airdopes 171 has a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz and has 6mm audio driver. Besides it also has Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) digital audio compression support.

At the volume range of 40% to 70%, the sound feels very much soft, sweet, and doesn’t sting to me. Over that, it is very much loud, like very loud, much like most of the boAt audio products.

Two negative feedback from my side is first, the bass is almost negligible. If you are a fan of high bass, this Airdopes 171 is not for you. The second one is the audio becomes silent at 20% or less volume and there’s no difference between 10% of volume and 0%. Overall, at its price, the sound is justified and is good enough for normal usage.

boAt Airdopes 171 Review 3_TechnoSports.co.in

Microphone:

I attended a lot of calls while using it and I got no one complaints about poor audio or connectivity issues as such. This means, despite being far away position from the mouth, microphones received my words clearly and easily. The good response of my Google Assistant is another proof of it. So, no complaints regarding mic quality at all.

Functionality:

Just making a variation of the press-time duration of the Multi-Function Buttons (MFB), you can do multiple things. There is also a double-tap functionality. The MFBs are soft enough and you need not press hard.

  • Press MFB for 2 seconds: Activate your Voice Assistant/Reject call
  • Press MFB for 3 seconds: On the Buds manually
  • Press MFB for 5 seconds: Off the Buds manually
  • Press MFB for 10 seconds: Perform Factory Reset
  • Single press on any of the MFBs: Pause or Play music/Receive call
  • Double press on Right MFB: Next Track/Switch between an active call and held call
  • Double press on Left MFB: Previous Track/Switch between an active call and held call

If you use a single bud at a time, in the case, the track skip or return function will not work.

boAt Airdopes 171 Review 6_TechnoSports.co.in

Battery Backup:

The only thing that surprised me is the battery backup. Each bud is holding 43mAh batteries inside and the charging case with MicroUSB post has 380mAh battery. The company claims a total to 13 hours of playback time including 3 times charging through the case, 3 hours of playback time for each bud, and a total of 70 hours standby time.

Firstly, following the instructions by boAt, I charged the total set for 2 hours using a 5V/2A adapter. After that currently, I’m using it for 17 hours long and still has a 70% charge in the buds. A single bud with a full charge is running for around 5 hours and I charged the buds three times already. Still, it can charge the buds, to get fully charged in the case, the buds are taking around 1.5 hours.

Point to note, I kept the volume at 60% all the time, and the time duration, I provided, is the playback time, not the standby time.

boAt Airdopes 171 Review 5_TechnoSports.co.in

Pros & Cons:

ProsCons
Premium Build QualityLess Bass
Great Battery LifeLower transmission range
Soft and Sweet Audio Quality
Low Latency
Good Microphone Reception
boAt Airdopes 171 Review 2_TechnoSports.co.in

Verdict:

At the pricepoint of ₹1,799, boAt’s new Airdope 171 is one of the best options. Its premium build quality, great audio, the latest Bluetooth version, and the long battery life are more than enough to become someone’s favourite daily use audio device. The only thing you have to compromise is the bass. But, you can’t ignore the pros for just one major con, I personally have no complaint regarding this, keeping in mind the price tag only.

If your heart wants this boAt Airdopes 171 after going through this entire review, you should undoubtedly go for it, also see our review of the Redmi Earbud S and Realme Buds Q, to see the differences. Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

0

As we all know Google Cloud is one of the major cloud platform in the cloud computing segment along with other players including Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and others. Major companies are shifting data from traditional servers to cloud servers for their speed, features and reliability but is cloud still enough reliable to hold sensitive information?

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?
via CSO

For this reason, major companies are building secure cloud servers of their own or relying on giants like Google, Microsoft and Amazon. So, according to CRN, a Google Cloud product manager explained why their new encrypted virtual machines run on AMD EPYC processors and not on Intel Xeon processors.

There’s no denial of the fact that AMD is overpowering Intel in every segment including desktop CPUs, mobile processors and even server processors. AMD launched EPYC lineup for its server processors based on their revolutionary Zen microarchitecture that power their Ryzen CPUs few years ago.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

Last year, AMD launched the Zen 2 based EPYC Rome processors which gave the huge benefit of switching to 7nm process and showed their performance supremacy once again. Intel, for the last couple of years, has not been able to deliver any breakthrough in performance but their server-based Xeon chips are very costly to implement but EPYC gave higher performance even coming half of the price as that of Intel.

AMD EPYC CPUs came with up to 64 cores and 128 threads along with up to 2.25 GHz base and 3.40 GHz clock speeds which made them so special when it comes to performance along with the fastest PCIe gen 4 support. It destroyed the likes of Platinum 8280 at almost half costs which attracted a lot of fore-runners in the server market.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

Confidential VMs by Google Cloud

So, its unsurprising of the fact that Google too has opted for AMD but preferring the Red team over their long partner Intel in a segment for Confidential VMs is kind of interesting and raises doubts among lot of people. On Tuesday, at the virtual Google Cloud Next conference, the first product came out to be the new Confidential Computing portfolio that encrypts data in memory and elsewhere outside the CPU.

This is the beta launch of the Confidential VMs which actually makes as Google Cloud “the first major cloud provider to offer this level of security and isolation while giving customers a simple, easy-to-use option for newly built as well as ‘lift and shift’ applications,” according to the vendor.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

Storing and retrieving encrypted data has been going on for a lot of time now but protecting that same data when it’s getting processed in the memory is a serious challenge. This requires major hardware solutions which exist in the form of Intel’s Software Guard Extensions (SGX), launched in 2015, and AMD’s Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV), came in 2017.

Confidential VMs are based on Google Cloud’s N2D series instances that run on AMD’s 2nd Gen EPYC ‘Rome’ processors, all of which come with an expanded version of SEV that supports 509 encryption keys that are generated by the processors’ Arm-based secure co-processor. The co-processor’s key manager generates the VM encryption keys, so neither Google Cloud nor any VMs running on the hypervisor can access to them.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

Why Google Cloud chose AMD over Intel?

Nelly Porter, a lead product manager at Google Cloud, said to CRN that it is due to the ease of use, low-performance impact along with scalability is some of the key reasons for the adoption of Confidential VMs, which in turn are actually the key reasons behind its decision to go with AMD SEV over Intel SGX.

Performance, security and cost are the three pillars of the server processors and in three of them Intel has been failing as they have been stuck with 14nm process. Intel had been involving in a lot of security flaws and their performance benefit is slipping way in front of AMD’s EPYC CPUs and the cost remains very high for Intel while with AMD you can get double the performances of Intel at half the prices.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

According to Porter, who believes that the way AMD SEV was designed customers don’t have to worry about redesigning or tweaking any of their applications to move them to Confidential VMs. The design and security of these Confidential VMs allow Google Cloud to ensure customers the security that they can provide to them. “This means nobody, not AMD, neither Google have access to those keys,” she said.

As per tests done by Google Cloud, the use of SEV impact only by 2-6% in performance that too depending on the workload which most companies are happy with until it exceed the 10% barrier. Greg Gibby, a senior product manager at AMD, also said that there’s minimal impact by implementing an AES-128 encryption engine in each memory controller of the CPU.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

This is not surprising how powerful AMD EPYC CPUs are and how many cores they posses, but when asked why they didn’t go with Intel SGX, Porter said it was a matter of the availability of processors supporting the feature as well as the complexity associated with adapting applications for the technology.

Porter said Intel SGX can be a “very useful tool for very dedicated and specific workloads,” such as protecting encryption keys, reviewing SSL and TLS connections and signing certificate requests for a certificate authority.” But the technology comes with a “significant price” associated with a need to redesign applications for Intel SGX enclaves, and the performance impact is significant, she added.

Why did Google Cloud choose AMD EPYC server CPUs for its Confidential VMs?

“From our perspective, for the workloads, we’re trying to enable, for use of use that we’re looking at and performance penalty,’ to tell customers [they] have to pay based on those three things, Intel SGX was an interesting idea, and we continue to look and work with Intel on that, but it’s not yet applicable to the workloads and scale that we’re looking at,” she said.

The words are enough to explain the switch to AMD, the Blue team is losing grounds in the desktop CPU market where it has nothing “exciting” to offer apart from higher clock speeds surrendering to the multi-core performance and focusing on only single-core performance, which will soon be overturned with AMD’s ambitious “Vermeer” CPUs based out of Zen 3 architecture.

In 2020, AMD has stepped the laptop market with its Ryzen 4000 mobile processors which is just destroying Intel coming in at lower prices and giving a monstrous performance which the blue team could have never expected. Now, with Google Cloud and other cloud vendors, AMD is joining hands to strengthen its role in the server market, which is currently dominated by Intel only, not to forget EPYC Milan server processors based on Zen 3 architecture will be launching this year itself.

The UK bans Huawei, follows the US: China’s Huawei removed from the UK’s 5G networks

0

There were rumours surrounding Huawei’s stay at the UK and today in a formal way the UK government has announced the removal of existing equipment of Huawei by 2027. The Chinese smartphone giant had played a huge role in the country’s 5G network and also had a great smartphone market in the country as well.

Almost all countries are furious on China and the companies based out of China, so a lot of countries including the US and India are getting rid of Chinese equipments & products out of their system. It all started when the US banned Huawei a year ago and the COVID-19, that originated from China, has just escalated the anger over Chinese products.

The UK bans Huawei, follow the US: China's Huawei removed from the UK's 5G networks

The UK government has even imposed a ban on buying new equipment from the company from December 31 this year. For such large step, obviously, there remains the hands of the US government and and a technical review by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NSC) in response to US sanctions.

Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said in a statement to the House of Commons: “By the time of the next election we will have implemented in law an irreversible path for the complete removal of Huawei equipment from our 5G networks”.

“5G will be transformative for our country, but only if we have confidence in the security and resilience of the infrastructure it is built upon. Following US sanctions against Huawei and updated technical advice from our cyber experts, the government has decided it is necessary to ban Huawei from our 5G networks”.

The UK bans Huawei, follow the US: China's Huawei removed from the UK's 5G networks

“No new kit is to be added from January 2021, and UK 5G networks will be Huawei free by the end of 2027. This decisive move provides the industry with the clarity and certainty it needs to get on with delivering 5G across the UK”.

The decision was taken on in a meeting of the NSC and the ban was imposed on Huawei in May itself after the UK’s initial decision on high risk vendors. Huawei uses a lot of technology based out of the US companies and so the UK government has to remove the firm’s access to products which have been built based on US semiconductor technology.

This ban is a result to remove the Chinese based company’s tech in sensitive and critical parts of the network. The officials also doubt that the new restrictions will make it impossible to continue to guarantee the security of Huawei equipment in the future as well. So, this is a major setback from Huawei because the UK is a huge market from them and being removed from 5G network can be the first step of its stay as it is involved in a variety of technology in the country.

FC Barcelona reveals their 20/21 home jersey

0

Today, on 14th July, Barcelona has officially announced their 20/21 home jersey and actually made it available for online purchase as well or via the Barça Stores of Camp Nou. Well, the design of the jerseys seem exactly as it was leaked previously, retaining the Barcelona’s heritage design with vertical stripes and obviously the blue and maroon color scheme.

FC Barcelona reveals their 20/21 home jersey

There will be two types of jerseys –  Match jersey & Stadium line jersey, where the Match jersey suggests the one that players will be wearing during matches. It uses Vaporknit technology, a lightweight high-performance textile whose excellent elasticity helps to boost mobility and generate a high level of breathability.

The Match jersey is now available at €139.99 already the kit is going on sale at the Barça Stores of Camp Nou (also online)Canaletes, Passeig de Gràcia and La Roca Village. Soon it will be available at the stores in Barcelona Airport (T1 and T2), which will open in the upcoming weeks.

Whereas the Stadium line jerseys will be the normal ones for fans with prices ranging from €59.99 to €89.99. According to FC Barcelona, due to some technical issues these models were withdrawn from the distribution controlled by FC Barcelona and once it gets resolved the Clube will be informing fans and they will be available through the usual stores and distribution channels.

Obviously, the jersey is inspired by the Club’s first golden era slated back to 1920s, the ‘blaugrana’ stripes are bordered on each side by gold strips, which evoke the design of the Club crest that the team wore on their shirts throughout the 1920s.

FC Barcelona reveals their 20/21 home jersey

To make it even better, there’ the roundneck collar that also has a gold-coloured rim, while the Catalan ‘senyera’ flag appears on the back, just underneath. The full kit also includes blue shorts, with a vertical maroon stripe on the side, which also has a gold rim, and horizontally striped socks that imitate the shirt design.

Also, FC Barcelona retains the logo of Rakuten on the front and Beko on the left sleeve, Main partners of the Men’s team, and the logo of Stanley, Main partner of the women’s team. The Club says that both the jersey and the short have been made using 100% recycled polyester, obtained using recycled plastic bottles that are melted to create a very fine thread.

Obviously, if you are an ardent Apple fan then there’s no look back as this seems to be a great deal, other details of the Apple MacBook Pro 16 (2019) model can be accessed here.
