Premier League 2020-21 Matchday 2 becomes the highest scoring matchday in history

With a stunning 44 goals scored across all matches held over the weekend, matchday 2 is now in the history books. Especially because it is the highest number of goals scored over any matchday in the Premier League history (after it was reduced to 20 teams from 22 teams).

The last record number of goals scored was 43 in the 2010-11 season.

Let’s have a better look at the weekend’s action.

  • Everton 5-2 West Brom
  • Leeds United 4-3 Fulham
  • Manchester United 1-3 Crystal Palace
  • Arsenal 2-1 West Ham United

Match of the Week

Southampton 2-5 Spurs

Spurs were the most impressive side over the weekend, with Harry Kane assisting all four of Son’s goals over the weekend.

A shambolic performance by the Saints, followed by a consolation penalty converted by Dann Ings saved them some heat.

However, we must give credit where credit is due. And that is to Jose Mourinho’s team who put in a brilliant effort away from home.

Honorable mention: Manchester United 1-3 Crystal Palace

Nobody really expected Palace to come away with a win at Old Trafford. However, controversial VAR decisions or not, Palace came away with all 3 points.

Zaha starred with a brace against his former club as Manchester United faced a disappointing start to the season. The silver lining to the loss was Donny Van de Beek’s debut, along with his first goal in the Premier League.

Player(s) of the Week

Heung Min Son & Harry Kane

Say what you will, the duo absolutely stole the show when they decimated Southampton in their own stadium. Kane assisted 4 and scored the fifth himself whereas Son bagged in the rest of the goals against the Saints.

Despite the number of hat-tricks scored already, Son leads the top scorer race with Dom Calvert-Lewin joining him at the top.

Shockers of the Week

  • De Gea having to face a re-take of the penalty awarded to Palace due to him being 2 inches off his line.
  • Kepa letting in another howler, almost assisting Mane for his second goal.
  • Keiran Gibbs hitting James Rodriguez in the face to earn a straight red.
  • Christensen taking down Mane a-la rugby to earn a straight red.
  • Yves Bissouma of Brighton being shown a red card for kicking Jamal Lewis in the face. Although not intentional, but dangerous.
