Takht Is NOT Dead — Karan Johar Confirms He Will Make It, But Here’s the Catch!

Bollywood’s most talked-about shelved project is back in the headlines — and this time, Karan Johar himself has set the record straight. If you’ve been waiting for the grand Mughal epic Takht to finally happen, there’s both hope and a reality check heading your way.

Takht & K3G2: Everything KJo Said — At a Glance

So What’s the Real Status of Takht?

When Karan Johar first announced Takht back in 2020, it felt like the Bollywood event of the decade. The cast alone had everyone’s jaw on the floor — Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and more, all united under one epic Mughal period drama. It was supposed to hit theatres by end of 2021.

Speaking to Hindustan Times recently, KJo made it crystal clear — there is no current revival of Takht, and no derivative version being developed either. But in the same breath, he called the screenplay by Sumit Roy the finest piece of writing in his entire career, adding that he hopes to make it one day.

That’s the kind of passion that keeps hope alive, honestly.

To understand the grandeur KJo is aiming for, Takht is rooted in the real Mughal succession wars — a period of Indian history you can read more about on Wikipedia’s Mughal Empire page, which gives rich context to the film’s dramatic setting.

Why Karan Johar Will Never Make K3G 2?

Here’s the most definitive answer fans have ever received about a Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham sequel — it’s simply not going to happen. KJo was honest about it: the 2001 family drama isn’t perfect, but the nostalgia attached to it is sacred. Making a sequel, he said, would be setting himself up for failure by messing with something audiences genuinely love.

Respect, honestly. Not every filmmaker has that kind of self-awareness.
