Karan Johar Announces Biopic on R N Kao, the Man Who Built India’s Spy Agency in the Shadows

Some stories stay hidden for decades before finally reaching the big screen. Karan Johar’s newly announced film is about to change that for one of India’s most consequential yet lesser-known figures — Rameshwar Nath Kao, the founding chief of India’s external intelligence agency.

Karan Johar: The Announcement

Johar unveiled the project on Instagram to mark 58 years since the founding of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s premier external intelligence agency. He framed Kao as a man who operated entirely behind the scenes, yet whose work laid the foundation for an institution that continues shaping India’s national security today.

Karan Johar: Movie Updates

Who Was R N Kao?

For those unfamiliar with his legacy, Kao was the founding chief of R&AW, tasked with building India’s external intelligence apparatus from the ground up. His work, largely conducted away from public visibility, played a crucial role in shaping India’s strategic and security landscape during some of its most pivotal geopolitical moments.

Why This Film Matters?

Spy biopics rooted in real intelligence history carry a unique challenge — balancing dramatic storytelling with the inherent secrecy surrounding such figures. Basing the film on Nitin Gokhale’s well-regarded book “Gentleman Spymaster” suggests the production is aiming for grounded, research-backed authenticity rather than pure Bollywood spectacle.

Given Karan Johar’s track record with big, emotionally driven storytelling, pairing his sensibility with a subject this historically significant could result in a film that appeals both to fans of spy thrillers and audiences interested in India’s intelligence history.

A Long Wait Ahead

With a release date set for August 2028, fans have a considerable wait ahead. That timeline suggests extensive pre-production, likely involving deep research into Kao’s life and possibly high-profile casting announcements in the coming months or years.
