Your next laptop could run its display at just 1Hz while you read emails — and that’s actually a very good thing. LG Display has begun the world’s first-ever mass production of a laptop LCD panel equipped with its Oxide 1Hz technology, and the battery life claims are turning heads.

LG Display Oxide 1Hz Panel: Key Details at a Glance

Feature	Details
Refresh Rate Range	1Hz (static) → 120Hz (dynamic)
Technology	Oxide TFT with low-leakage materials
Battery Life Gain	Up to 48% more vs existing solutions
First Laptop Partner	Dell XPS 14 & XPS 16 (from $1,549)
Dell XPS Battery Claim	Up to 31 hours streaming (2K display)
OLED Version	Mass production planned from 2027
Carbon Reduction Goal	Up to 10% reduction in usage-phase emissions

How Does Oxide 1Hz Actually Work?

The panel automatically switches the refresh rate down to 1Hz when the screen is static and up to 120Hz when needed — dropping to 1Hz when checking emails or reading documents, and climbing back to 120Hz when streaming movies or playing games. To pull this off, LG developed new circuit algorithms, a new panel design, and oxide materials with lower leakage in low refresh operation.

This is the same variable refresh rate concept that smartphones adopted years ago — it’s just taken until now to arrive on laptop LCDs. Intel and BOE are also working on LTPO-based panels targeting the same goal, so this is shaping up as an industry-wide shift.

Dell XPS Gets It First — With a Catch

Dell’s 2026 XPS 14 and XPS 16 both feature the 1Hz–120Hz display as the base option, starting at $1,549 — and the feature is not commanding a premium. There is a notable trade-off though: the base display option offers a 1920×1200 resolution with LG’s 1–120Hz panel, but the more premium display options lose the 1Hz capability, opting instead for an OLED with a VRR window of 20–120Hz.

So buyers who want the best battery life will need to stick with the base panel. LG’s OLED version arriving in 2027 should eventually close that gap. Read our guide to best laptops for battery life on TechnoSports for more options right now.
