After months of uncertainty, doubt, and frustrating delays, Indian football finally has a lifeline. The Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season will kick off on February 14, 2026 (Saturday), Union Sports Minister Mansukh L. Mandaviya announced, ending the sport’s stagnation nightmare. With all 14 clubs committed and a parallel I-League running alongside, Indian elite club football is officially back.
The Big News: ISL Returns February 14, 2026
The announcement comes as enormous relief to players, clubs, and millions of Indian football fans who feared the beloved league might collapse under legal and financial pressure. Mandaviya stated: “This is happy news for football lovers in the country, our players, and everyone associated with football. This league is being organized with the objective of promoting football in the country, improving the country’s performance in football, and discovering good players through the league.”
The minister also clarified the delays: “The ISL was delayed owing to some court cases. However, we have been able to speak to all stakeholders, and the issue has been resolved, ISL will be held this year.”
The Complete Format: 91 ISL Matches + I-League Running Parallel
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed the format: “There will be single home and away leg matches. A total of 91 matches will be played with 14 teams taking part in the ISL. For I-League, a total of 55 matches will be played with 11 teams taking part.”
This dual-league approach marks a historic moment—Indian football will now feature both the premium ISL and competitive I-League running simultaneously, creating unprecedented opportunity for player development and grassroots growth.
The Financial Reality: Cost-Cutting & Government Support
| League | Format | Teams | Matches | AIFF Budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISL | H&A | 14 | 91 | ₹10.3 Cr (40%) |
| I-League | H&A | 11 | 55 | ₹3.2 Cr |
| Women’s League | Division 1&2 | Multiple | TBA | 100% Funded |
| I-League Merger | 5 Zones | 40 Teams | TBA | Included |
The AIFF will contribute ₹10.3 crore for ISL (40% of total budget), ₹3.2 crore for I-League, and 100% funding for the Indian Women’s League. The remaining ISL funds come from the Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC) norms, which the Union Sports Ministry earmarks for sports federations annually.
The Path Forward: What This Means for Indian Football
One AIFF official emphasized the urgency: “It’s time for yes or no. If we have only five clubs, we go with five clubs. Nothing else to be discussed, either yes or no.” This reflects the pressure clubs faced to commit despite financial uncertainty.
Yet the commitment is real. All 14 ISL clubs have agreed to participate, signaling confidence in the league’s future despite cost-cutting measures.
