Who Is the Longest-Serving Head Coach in ISL?

The answer, according to the claim doing the rounds, is Juan Pedro Benali. The Spaniard is now described as the longest-serving head coach of a single club in ISL history, at 1,230 days and counting with NorthEast United FC. Fans call him “Don Pedro,” and the story is still being written in the hills.

Who Is the Longest-Serving Head Coach in ISL?

From Bottom of the Table to Playoffs

Benali arrived after NorthEast finished last in ISL 2022-23 with just five points from 20 matches. In his first assignment he guided the Highlanders to the semi-finals of the 2023 Durand Cup, and in his first ISL season the club missed the playoffs by a single point.

The Trophy That Changed Everything

In 2024, NorthEast won the Durand Cup, the first major silverware in the club’s history. The club then finished fourth in the ISL, earning a home playoff after a four-year gap. In March 2025 they rewarded him with a new two-year deal. CEO Mandar Tamhane called continuity the “cornerstone” of the project.

A Coach Who Builds People

Benali also brought young talents like Parthib Gogoi, Macarton Louis Nickson and Phalguni Singh into the spotlight. He describes the club as “one big family,” where there is no difference between the head coach and the person who cuts the grass.

What Comes Next

His contract runs through the 2026-27 season, which kicks off this week, so the day count will keep climbing.
