AMD launches Radeon RX 5500 Series GPUs for desktop & laptops

AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT & Radeon RX 5500 7nm Navi 14 GPUs goes official – up to 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM, 6.4 Billion Transistors

The Red Team has finally launched the much-awaited Radeon RX 5500 series based on 7nm Navi GPUs. AMD had an amazing 2019 for both its CPUs and GPUs, going 7nm for all of its new products that in turn gave us an incredible performance for desktop.

AMD also showed off their RDNA architecture when they launched the RX 5700 GPUs which made its mark in the market giving a stiff competition to NVIDIA’s RTX lineup even though being priced at $349 onwards. It was expected by the company to offer something cheaper for its consumers in the coming days.

AMD launches Radeon RX 5500 Series GPUs for desktop & laptops

Today at its auspicious 7th October, AMD has launched the RX 5500 GPU series that is built around a new, smaller Navi GPU that will allow AMD to bring their latest Radeon technologies down to more affordable, mainstream video cards, as well as laptops for the first time.

AMD is launching the RX 5500 series based on Navi 14 in three different parts, the Radeon RX 5500 XT, the Radeon RX 5500 and the Radeon RX 5500M. The first two of them are desktop focussed budget GPUs which directly competes with NVIDIA’s GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 series.

The Radeon RX 5500M is focussed towards gaming laptops and this will be the first time Navi GPU will be used on a mobile platform. This new GPU series focusses on smooth 1080p gaming at a budget range.

AMD even clarifies that the RX 5500 series aims for 60 fps (frames per second) in AAA games and 90-plus fps in eSports titles at 1080p, which is still a dominant resolution for most PC gamers. For both the Radeon RX 5500 XT and Radeon RX 5500 GPUs, we will only see GPUs from OEMs with custom cooling designs and clock speeds.

Navi 14: Smaller yet powerful

The Navi 14 is a very typical slimmed-down version of AMD’s leading-edge technology that is based on RDNA architecture. In terms of die size and transistor counts, AMD has dropped about 3.9B transistors from Navi 10, which comes to 38% fewer transistors overall. This makes the die size around 158mm2, almost 37% smaller than Navi 10.

Thanks to TMSC’s 7nm process, AMD has been able to stack more transistors in a small die. Compared to Polaris 11 (used in RX 460/560), the company has increased its transistor count by 113% while only increasing the die size by 28%.

Navi 14 is a full-fat Navi GPU in terms of architecture and features like its brother RX 5700 series. The Navi 14 GPUs will support PCIe 4.0 as well as AMD’s new display processing (Radeon Display Engine) and video processing (Radeon Media Engine) blocks.

The Navi 14 can support up to 5 monitor streams, on the other hand, the video processing block remains entirely unchanged from Navi 10 and should offer the same encode and decode performance as AMD’s higher-end cards.

Microsoft Surface Duo is a dual-screen smartphone we’ve all been waiting for

Out of the bunch of Microsoft phones, we have seen in the past including Lumia devices running on Windows which couldn’t maintain its run against the likes of Android and iOS. Already we are seeing the dual-screen Android smartphone from various companies this year, Microsoft has joined the race as well with the Surface Duo.

Microsoft has braced the Android platform for the first time for its unique dual-screen smartphone – the Surface Neo. Not much has been revealed about the device but all we know is that it sports two 5.6-inch screens that are joined together by a 360-degree hinge.

Microsoft Surface Duo is a dual-screen smartphone we've all been waiting for

It is not a foldable OLED display like the Samsung Galaxy Fold but it does offer you with the convenience of a dual-screen display along with the versatility of Android. Each of the displays can run its own apps and can expand to show more information across both of the screens.

When you have a phone call to attend, you can simply fold one of the screens behind the other to make the Duo easier to hold. As for now, it remains unclear whether you can fold a screen back to use a single screen for traditional Android apps.

Wired has pointed out that the device uses one of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipsets which is pretty decent for daily usage or heavy tasks as well. One of the biggest highlights of the Surface Duo is that it also marks a new era of partnership between Google and Microsoft.

During the launch, Panay showed us the Duo running on a custom version of Android that has been especially been optimized by Google to make use of the dual screens. Now you might be curious why Android and not the Windows 10X seen on the Surface Neo? Here’s what Panay has to say:

At the end of the day, where the applications sit today, the opportunity that people have already leaned into, that developers have already taken advantage of—it’s right there. And there’s a reality to that. To ignore that would be silly

Panos Panay

The Surface Duo will be available for the consumers in Holiday 2020, now presenting this device does it make any sense? Yes, it makes because this time will give developers the time to make impressive apps that can maximize and optimize apps for a fluid dual-screen experience.

The designing of the Surface Duo is not yet complete. When it was shown off, it lacked a proper rear camera and requires flipping the phone back to use the front camera for taking pictures. This likely seems to change and we could get a full-fledged Surface Duo with all features next year.

Microsoft’s focus is clear this time – maximize the productivity of a smartphone using two displays and effectively utilizing it via Android OS.

Microsoft Surface Duo is a dual-screen smartphone we've all been waiting for

Rather than clinging onto the classic computing concepts, Microsoft is looking at where the mobile industry is really moving this time.

We are yet to get the real taste of the Surface Duo but yes, with the preview what we can really expect is an exciting device rather than its old Lumia smartphones. How excited are you with this futuristic device? Tell us in the comments down below… 😁

Surface Neo will use Intel’s upcoming 10nm Lakefield CPUs with 5W & 7W TDP

0

The most innovative product that Microsoft introduced us recently is the Surface Neo which is a dual-screen hybrid computing device. It runs on Microsoft’s custom Windows 10X that perfectly helps this dual-screen computing device work effectively.

The Microsoft Neo features two 9-inch displays, a fold-out keyboard, a 360° hinge and is compatible with the Surface Slim Pen that docks on the rear of the device. Also, this is the first device that features Intel’s 11th-generation Lakefield processor based on the 10nm process.

Surface Neo will use Intel's upcoming 10nm Lakefield CPUs with 5W & 7W TDP

The Lakefield CPU features a primary Sunny Cove core, four 10-nanometer “Tremont” cores and Foveros 3D chip stacking technology. It will be accompanied with Intel’s latest Gen 11 integrated graphics. This mix of various CPU cores will allow small-form-factor devices to deliver both performance and power efficiency at the same time.

The Lakefield CPUs will have 5 W and 7 W thermal design powers (TDP), although Microsoft has not yet confirmed which variant it will include in the Neo.

Surface Neo will use Intel's upcoming 10nm Lakefield CPUs with 5W & 7W TDP

The Lakefield CPUs are very futuristic and they operate more like the ARM processors found in smartphones than the traditional CPUs that have been powering both laptops and desktop. Foveros is essentially an evolution of this 2D integration, in which other components can be stacked on top of each other in a form of logic-on-logic integration.

It’s packed with more than one type of CPU core to create a more stable and power-efficient system almost as we see in smartphone SoCs. Also, these hybrid SoCs can even come with their own integrated memory, I/O interface, wireless connectivity and integrated CPUs.

Surface Neo will use Intel's upcoming 10nm Lakefield CPUs with 5W & 7W TDP

Microsoft’s Panos Panay even said that the Lakefield chip for the Surface Neo has been specifically designed for dual-screen systems. Intel has managed to reduce the silicon size to a circuit board just half the usual size, the idea is making the device powerful even though being compact in size.

Microsoft has gone back to ARM chips for its Surface Pro X but with Intel’s 3D 10-nanometer tech, we will see more of this thin and pocket-friendly yet powerful devices in the near future. What do you think about the Lakefield CPUs? Tell us in the comments below. 😊

Microsoft Surface Neo is a foldable Windows 10X tablet that redefines computing

0

Microsoft in its annual Surface product launch event announced a new product that has completely stunned the world. This is a foldable tablet that runs on an advanced form of Windows 10 and will be powered by Intel’s upcoming Lakefield processors.

Microsoft Surface Neo is a foldable Windows 10X tablet that redefines computing

The Microsoft Surface Neo hopes to revolutionise the laptop market in the way that the Surface Pro series has done since 2012. The Surface series changed the way of two-in-ones and now when companies like Samsung & Huawei are focussing on foldable smartphones, Microsoft has stepped up the game showing this futuristic device.

We wanted to make you a product that felt smaller, that fit your lifestyle, but also in a big way that made you more productive and creative, We are currently only classing one as a 2-in-1, albeit in a new form factor

Panos Panay

The product is just 5.6mm thin and weighs 655g, packs its own 9-inch LCD screen, which Panay said to be the thinnest out there. The two separate displays are connected by more than 60 micro coax cables, which is said to thinner than a human hair, to create the interaction between the two of the screens.

When the Neo is fully unfolded, the combined screens measure about 13 inches diagonal, making the size of a 2-in-1 display. And there’s the new Surface Slim Pen that mounts magnetically on the Neo’s back.

Also if you really need to get some writing work done, you can always use an additional keyboard that unfolds to sit on top of the Neo’s second screen. Microsoft Neo runs on the Windows 10X which is basically built for lighter devices and foldable ones as well.

Microsoft Surface Neo is a foldable Windows 10X tablet that redefines computing
The Surface Neo is amazingly seek

The Windows 10X basically helps to maximize productivity by utilizing the two of the screens available. When you’re are using Windows 10X, the Neo can capably reflow apps running on one of the screens to fill both of them.

Now when you’re using the hidden keyboard, Windows 10X intelligently squeezes all of the content of your primary display and puts a “wonder bar” full of emoji and shortcuts within reach of those physical keys. This helps to focus on what you need and maximize the potential of this foldable hybrid.

You can even unfold the two screen and make a larger display, use it to watch movies or videos, use the larger screen and detach the keyboard and make it a mini-laptop. So, this Microsoft Neo is a very interesting futuristic device that is compact, powerful, portable and flexible.

The Neo is powered by Intel’s upcoming Lakefield CPUs, and we will tell you more about it n our next article. Sadly, this amazing device will not be available until late 2020, specifically during the holiday season according to Panay, also there’s no word yet on pricing either.

Microsoft launches new Surface Pro X with 7W Surface SQ1 chipset at $999

0

The new Microsoft Surface Pro X features its own 7 W ARM chipset with 2x USB Type-C and LTE support, pre-order starts from today

Finally, Microsoft announces its new Surface products at its event held a few hours ago and among them, the new Surface Pro X is a unique one. Borrowing the design aesthetics from it’s Surface Pro lineup, the new boy here is a 13-inch tablet that is just 5.3 mm thick.

Microsoft launches new Surface Pro X with 7W Surface SQ1 chipset at $999

It was earlier rumoured that Microsoft will launch a new Surface Pro product with its own designed SoC, and now it’s official. The touchscreen display has a 2,880 x 1,920 resolution, with Microsoft promising a 1,400:1 contrast ratio and a 267 PPI. Also, it features the thinnest bezels ever on a tablet cum notebook.

The 2-in-1 weighs just 0.76Kg, making it incredibly light in spite of the fact that it houses the same 12-inch chassis as earlier models. The Microsoft Surface Pro X also supports USB-C and has LTE option as well for staying always-connected.

The thing that has stunned everyone is the inclusion of its own custom ARM chipset, which Microsoft calls the Surface SQ1 chipset. Panos Panay has even claimed that the SoC will have a 7 W thermal design power (TDP) and will be 3x as powerful per watt as the Intel-powered Surface Pro 6.

The Surface Pro X also features an AI chip, the first Surface product to do so, which in fact Microsoft claims will generate up to 9 Teraops of computational power. The graphics is handled by the Adreno 685 iGPU. It is coupled with 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM and it’ll come with a removable 128GB, 256GB or 512GB SSD.

The 2-in-1 will be sold alongside a new Type Cover that will be exclusive to the Surface Pro X only. The unique thing is that the Type Cover charges the new Surface Slim Pen too, and the latter rests in the Type Cover when is not in use.

Microsoft has promised 13 hours of battery life and a zero to 80 per cent quick-charge time of under an hour only. It’s unclear of which version of Windows 10 the Surface Pro X will run on and Microsoft did not even confirm whether it will run x86 apps too.

The Surface Pro X starts at US$999, it will go up for pre-order later today and will start shipping on from November 5 onwards.

Intel Cascade Lake-X Core i9 processors start at $590

0

Intel’s X-series processors have been the key to the high-end desktop performance until few years before the launch of Threadripper CPUs. The Threadripper 2000 series has absolutely been amazing, truly ripping apart Intel’s costlier X-series of processors.

Till now it was unclear how would Intel ultimately do to its X-series lineup with its age-old architecture. The Skylake X Refresh generation will cost several factors comparable to AMD’s High-End Desktop (HEDT) processors.

Intel Cascade Lake-X Core i9 processors start at $590

Intel has confirmed that the new Cascade Lake-X CPUs will cost between $590 and $979, making it more affordable than its predecessors. Intel’s HEDT offerings have been limited to just four SKUs, all of which have been benchmarked on Geekbench so far.

As we see the product family, the 10-core Core i9-10900X will be the baby of the family, followed by the 12-core Core i9-10920X and the 14-core Core i9-10940X, with the monstrous 18-core Core i9-10980XE topping the product stack.

Intel Cascade Lake-X Core i9 processors start at $590

The Intel Core i9-10980XE gives some tough competition to AMD’s previous-gen Threadripper offerings, finally becoming the lone one to defeat it. Not to forget that next month AMD will release its Threadripper 3000 CPUs, this fragile lead will not be enough to satisfy consumers.

All of these CPUs will be unlocked ones with 165W of TDP. Except for the Core i9-10980XE, all of the CPUs will feature 19.25 MB of L3 cache and the 18-core monster will feature 24.75 MB of L3 cache. The Intel Core i9-10980XE has an impressive single-core boost clock frequency of 4.8GHz.

Intel Cascade Lake-X Core i9 processors start at $590

All of these CPUs will support Intel Hyper-Threading along with 256 GB of quad-channel DDR4-2933 RAM support and will come with 72 PCIe lanes. The Cascade Lake-X will be launching in November, all these SKUs are expected to support the new Wi-Fi 6 standard and will support through X299 motherboards.

Intel has finally lowered its pricings for its CPUs but maybe it can get a lot more costly when it comes to market. But keeping in mind how powerful the Ryzen 3000 series CPUs are, and Threadripper 3000 are coming later this year, Intel clinging on to another generation of 14++ into the high-end desktop market might give them hard times in the near future.
