ESET Research discovers StrongPity APT group’s espionage campaign targeting Android users with trojanized Telegram app
  • ESET researchers identified an active StrongPity campaign distributing a fully functional but trojanized version of the legitimate Telegram app.
  • This is the first time that the described modules and their functionality have been documented publicly.
  • StrongPity’s backdoor is modular and has various spying features, such as recording phone calls, collecting SMS messages, collecting lists of call logs and contact lists, and much more.
  • If the victim grants the malicious StrongPity app notification access and accessibility services, the malware is able to exfiltrate communication from messaging apps such as Viber, Skype, Gmail, Messenger, and Tinder.  
  • A copycat website mimicking Shagle, an adult video-chat service, is used to distribute StrongPity’s mobile backdoor app.
  • The app is a modified version of the open-source Telegram app, repackaged with StrongPity backdoor code.
  • Based on similarities with previous StrongPity backdoor code and the app being signed with a certificate from an earlier StrongPity campaign, we attribute this threat to the StrongPity APT group.

ESET researchers identified an active StrongPity APT group campaign leveraging a fully functional but trojanized version of the legitimate Telegram app, which despite being non-existent, has been repackaged as „the“ Shagle app. This StrongPity backdoor has various spying features: its 11 dynamically triggered modules are responsible for recording phone calls, collecting SMS messages, collecting lists of call logs, and contact lists, and much more.

These modules are being documented publicly for the very first time. If the victim grants the malicious StrongPity app notification access and accessibility services, the app will also have access to incoming notifications from 17 apps such as Viber, Skype, Gmail, Messenger, and Tinder, and will be able to exfiltrate chat communication from other apps. The campaign is likely very narrowly targeted, since ESET telemetry still hasn’t identify any victims. 

Unlike the entirely web-based, genuine Shagle site, which doesn’t offer an official mobile app to access its services, the copycat site only provides an Android app to download, with no web-based streaming possible. This trojanized Telegram app has never been made available from the Google Play store.

The malicious code, its functionality, class names, and the certificate used to sign the APK file, are the identical to the previous campaign; thus ESET believes with high confidence that this operation belongs to the StrongPity group. Code analysis revealed that the backdoor is modular and additional binary modules are downloaded from the C&C server. This means that the number and type of modules used can be changed at any time to fit the campaign requests when operated by the StrongPity group.

“During our research, the analyzed version of malware available from the copycat website was not active anymore and it was no longer possible to successfully install and trigger its backdoor functionality. This is because StrongPity hasn’t obtained its own API ID for its trojanized Telegram app. But that might change at any time should the threat actor decide to update the malicious app,” says Lukáš Štefanko, the ESET researcher who analyzed the trojanized Telegram app.

The repackaged version of Telegram uses the same package name as the legitimate Telegram app. Package names are supposed to be unique IDs for each Android app and must be unique on any given device. This means that if the official Telegram app is already installed on the device of a potential victim, then this backdoored version can’t be installed. “This might mean one of two things – either the threat actor first communicates with potential victims and pushes them to uninstall Telegram from their devices if it is installed, or the campaign focuses on countries where Telegram usage is rare for communication,” adds Štefanko.

StrongPity’s app should have worked just as the official version does for communication, using standard APIs that are well documented on the Telegram website, but it no longer does. Compared to the first StrongPity malware discovered for mobile, this StrongPity backdoor has extended spying features, being able to spy on incoming notifications and exfiltrate chat communication, if the victim grants the app notification access and activates accessibility services.

~ AIGF applauds the government’s decision and hails it as a breakthrough move for India’s flourishing online gaming industry ~

~ In the context of the proposed amendments to the IT Rules for online gaming, The Quantum Hub (TQH) organized a discussion along with the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) today ~

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently published a draft rules pertaining to online gaming for public consultation. One of its key proposals, is a self-regulatory framework that, in the future, might also govern the content of online gaming. The self-regulatory organization (SRO) would be responsible for registering and approving games, as well as providing a grievance redressal mechanism.

Supporting this decision, Mr. Roland Landers, CEO, All India Gaming Federation, said, “The draft rules present a balanced and efficient approach for the regulation of online gaming and keeps in mind both the interests of innovation and consumer protection needs. We welcome the opportunity to interact with different audiences and believe that it is crucial to educate and inform all stakeholders and consumers on how the rules will be relevant to them. Developing capacity at this early stage would mean that as and when these draft rules are implemented and come to force, everyone will be fully prepared to uphold their obligations and enforce their rights within the online gaming ecosystem..” 

A MeitY notice states that an intermediary for online gaming “shall observe the due diligence required under the rules while discharging its duties, including reasonable efforts to cause its users not to host, display, upload, publish, transmit or share an online game not in compliance with Indian law, including any law on gambling or betting.”

“We appreciate the government’s continued commitment to an open and transparent process, and we look forward to continuing our engagement during the consultation period. These regulations will go a long way toward protecting consumer interests and promoting the responsible and fair growth of the sector.” Mr. Landers concluded.

The online gaming industry in India is a nascent yet quite lucrative sector in India. In absence of a regulatory framework, not-for-profit organizations, like All India Gaming Federation, have been overseeing the industry functioning and challenges closely ensuring seamless growth. Moreover, as per the recent report by gaming-focused venture fund Lumikai, India’s online gaming market is expected to touch $8.6 billion in FY2027 from about $2.6 billion in 2022.

The new trailer starts with a shot of a massive kingdom and the voiceover unveils an abandoned baby who was born to Menaka and Viswamithra. The new trailer continues and introduced the baby as Shaakuntala, who was born with a purpose.

On cutting to the next shot, we have introduced to king Dushyant and he has met Shaakuntala for the first time in a forest. After that, he falls in love, and it was love at first sight as the camera pans to Samantha. She is looking absolutely ethereal. She’s covered in butterflies when Dushyant sees her for the first time. 

The remainder of the film is about Shaakuntala’s battle for her love and the repercussions she has to face for the same. 

The Telugu love drama is truly a high-budget film, the project has been directed by Gunasekhar, who is best known for his epic period drama Rudhramadevi with Anushka Shetty. 

In 2020, speaking at the launch of the movie recently, Samantha said that this will be her dream project and dream role. She has teamed up with Gunasekhar for the first time. 

The film, produced on a massive budget by Gunasekhar himself, will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. It will hit the screens worldwide on February 17. 

Samantha was recently seen in the Telugu film Pushpa, in which she danced to the widely popular song, Oa Antava. In Tamil, she was seen in the romantic comedy Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kadhal, which co-starred Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. 

In 2021, Samantha was seen playing a Sri Lankan Tamil rebel in the hit web series, Family Man season 2. She played a character called Raji, and her performance was extremely well-received.

Samantha will soon make her international film debut with Arrangements of Love, which will be directed by Downton Abbey creator Philip John. As per Variety, the project will be produced by Sunita Tati, who had previously worked with Samantha on Oh! Baby, the Telugu adaptation of the Korean comedy, Miss Granny. She also has Raj and DK’s Citadel, also starring V. 

Shaakuntalam: Release Date 

The Telugu love drama film will hit on 17th February 2023.
