Nokia Extends HMD Deal: Feature Phones Live Beyond 2026

The iconic Nokia feature phone isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Nokia has extended its licensing agreement with HMD Global beyond 2026, allowing continued sales of feature phones in India, the world’s largest feature phone market, with the extension pushing the deadline another two to three years beyond its original 2026 expiry.

Nokia HMD Deal: Key Details at a Glance

Why This Extension Matters

This strategic move keeps Nokia’s legendary durability and brand recognition alive in emerging markets where feature phones remain essential. In 2016, HMD shipped about 35 million units, with shipments peaking in subsequent years, proving the enduring demand for reliable, affordable communication devices.

The extension particularly benefits regions like India and the Middle East, where feature phones serve as primary communication tools for millions. While HMD Global has shifted focus to its own smartphone brand, this deal ensures Nokia’s heritage continues in the feature phone segment.

The Bigger Picture

HMD has discontinued the smartphones that are still under the Nokia brand, with the exemption of feature phones, making this extension crucial for maintaining Nokia’s presence in the mobile market. The move reflects Nokia’s understanding that feature phones aren’t just legacy products—they’re essential tools in developing markets.

This partnership demonstrates how traditional mobile technology can coexist with smartphone innovation, serving different user needs and economic realities across global markets.
