During a recent live stream, Will Smith shared the big news about sequel.

“There’s a really cool Hancock 2 idea… We haven’t even talked about it,” he said, teasing that discussions are still in the early stages.

But what got fans even more excited was his next statement:

“I’m going to give you one little piece. Zendaya [is] being approached for a role in Hancock 2.”

While he didn’t reveal any further details about Zendaya’s potential character, just the idea of her joining the franchise has already created a buzz online.

A Look Back at Hancock (2008)

For those who need a refresher, Hancock was a unique take on the superhero genre. Released in 2008 and directed by Peter Berg, the film followed John Hancock (Will Smith), a reluctant and troubled superhero with superhuman strength, flight abilities, and a drinking problem.

Unlike typical superheroes, Hancock was reckless, often causing more destruction than good. The movie explored his journey of redemption, especially after meeting Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), a PR specialist who helped him clean up his image.

However, the biggest twist in the film came with the introduction of Mary Embrey (Charlize Theron)—Ray’s wife—who was later revealed to have similar powers to Hancock. Their connection hinted at a much deeper backstory, one that left fans wanting more.

Why Has Hancock 2 Taken So Long?

A sequel to Hancock has been talked about for years. In 2009, director Peter Berg confirmed that both Will Smith and Charlize Theron were expected to return for sequel.

However, the project kept facing delays due to various reasons—mainly scheduling conflicts with Smith’s other movies. In 2012, Berg gave an update, saying:

“It’s a question of timing. Will [Smith] has an idea for it, and we’re all excited to do it.”

Despite multiple discussions, the sequel never took off.

Even Charlize Theron, who played Mary Embrey, has expressed interest in returning. In an interview with ComicBook in 2020, she said:

“I’ll still make that movie, I would do it in a heartbeat.”

Now, with Will Smith confirming that a sequel is officially in the works, it looks like Hancock 2 is finally moving forward.

What Could Sequel Be About?

With Sequel now in development, fans are curious about what the story will be.

• Will we explore more about Hancock and Mary’s origins?
• Will Zendaya play another superhero connected to their past?
• Could the film introduce new villains or a larger superhero world?

Since the original film left a lot of questions unanswered, there’s plenty of room for an exciting sequel.

One thing is certain: if the sequel brings back the action, humor, and emotional depth of the first movie while adding fresh elements, it could be a huge hit.

What’s Next?

So far, no release date has been announced for Hancock 2, but now that the project is officially moving forward, we can expect more updates soon.

With Will Smith confirming development, Zendaya being considered for a role, and Charlize Theron open to returning, things are finally looking promising for the sequel.
