TATA WPL: TATA Acquires WPL Rights on a 5-Year Deal, Cementing its Status as a Dominant Sports Investor!

TATA, one of the biggest conglomerates in India, has bagged the title sponsorship for the first five years of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after an understanding with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). TATA had also replaced the Chinese tech brand Vivo for the Indian Premier League (IPL) title rights.

Here’s everything you need to know about TATA’s acquisition of the WPL title rights:

  1. Five-year deal: TATA has signed a five-year agreement with BCCI for the title sponsorship of the Women’s Premier League.
  2. Deal worth: The value of the WPL sponsorship deal is yet to be confirmed.
  3. Products leveraged: Tata Motors and Tata financial services will be the products leveraged. Tata Motors has been a constant in the IPL in recent seasons, with the Super Striker Award, with their cars – Tata Nexon, Tata Harrier, and Tata Punch all being up for grabs.
  4. Final date: The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League will kick off on March 4. The 22-game season will be played across two venues – DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be played on March 26, just five days before the IPL 2023.
  5. Franchise and broadcast rights: The BCCI sold five teams for a combined 4670 crore before a 951 crore deal with Viacom18.
  6. Bidding process: The tender document for the title rights was released by the BCCI well in time for the bidders to consider it and was up for sale till February 9. The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process for submissions of bids, rights and obligations of the title sponsor, etc. were contained in the ‘Request for Proposal’ (“RFP”) which was available on receipt of payment of a non-refundable fee of INR 1,00,000 plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax.
