One Summer, One Accident: Summer Vacation Turns a Teen Romance Into a Thriller

Some K-dramas ease you in. Summer Vacation lulls you with sea breezes and shy glances, then flips the whole story in a single moment.

Summer Vacation Drama Snapshot

Two Teens, Two Cages

Ha Yeon is an ordinary high school senior who just wants a quiet, uneventful life. She reluctantly joins her family when they move temporarily to a coastal town for vacation and work. She’s shy, often pushed around by friends, teachers and even her own family, and she’s quietly on the verge of collapsing.

Then there’s Yu Gyeom, the sole grandson of a prominent, almost royal family in that town. He’s good-looking and an exceptional swimmer, yet his family’s strict rules keep him in what the review calls a golden cage. They even get in the way of a normal bond with his mother or his girlfriend.

So when these two meet, it feels like fate: one crushed by expectations, the other tired of being ignored.

Why It Feels Real?

The drama’s charm isn’t in a fairy-tale romance. It’s in how true to life the teens’ behavior is. They feel a spark, then hesitate and even pretend not to know each other the next time they meet. And summer or not, they’re still seniors in South Korea, so classes go on.

The show also touches on patriarchal values from two angles. Yu Gyeom is treated like a prize to be won, while Ha Yeon is treated more like a maid than a daughter at home.

The Twist

Just as the secret romance blooms, Yu Gyeom’s girlfriend Sae Ryeong (Hong Ye Ji) arrives. Looking sweet but hiding a nasty side, she starts harassing Ha Yeon the moment she senses Yu Gyeom’s interest, and even threatens her. Then comes the shock: in an honest accident, Ha Yeon ends up killing Sae Ryeong.

Just like that, a melodramatic summer romance becomes a suspenseful thriller.

What to Watch For?
