Marvel didn’t just show up to New York Comic Con 2026, it left the crowd guessing. Two big announcements stole the spotlight: a secretive spy series called Zodiac, and the return of the undead in three new Marvel Zombies specials, one each Halloween through 2029. Here’s everything confirmed so far, and the theories already flying around.

Note: The NewsMobile link wouldn’t open for me, so this post is based on The Main Street Mouse’s coverage of both announcements.

Zodiac: A Global Spy Thriller Wrapped in Mystery

Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise, announced Zodiac and kept things deliberately short. He called it a global spy thriller and said he couldn’t share more because it’s a secret. What we do know is that it’s headed to Disney+ in 2028, filming begins in spring 2027 in London, and casting kicks off within a couple of weeks. No cast, writers or plot details have been revealed.

The one real clue is the logo. Winderbaum teased that the title design hides hints about where the story is going, and fans quickly noticed design elements that resemble S.H.I.E.L.D., the spy agency that has been central to the MCU for years. Marvel hasn’t confirmed any connection, but a spy thriller plus that logo makes the leap easy to understand.

The name also has comic book roots. In Marvel Comics, the Zodiac is a criminal organisation whose members take their themes from the twelve zodiac signs. The group has clashed with Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers, which adds fuel to the theories. Whether the series follows the comics or takes the name somewhere new is still unknown.

Marvel Zombies Is Back: Three Specials, Three Halloweens

Marvel Zombies began as a fan-favourite episode of the animated series What If…?, which imagined a zombie outbreak overtaking Earth’s heroes. It was popular enough to earn its own Disney+ series, which ended on a cliffhanger and left several heroes’ fates unresolved. Now those questions are getting answers through three animated specials, released one per Halloween season from 2027 to 2029.

Spoiler warning: the next sections touch on how the original series ended.

Marvel

The Winter Soldier (Halloween 2027)

The first special focuses on Bucky Barnes. In the original series, Wanda Maximoff threw him a great distance, but his fate was never shown on screen. Fans have wondered ever since whether he survived. Winderbaum teased that the special has some big surprises in store.

The Fist of Khonshu (Halloween 2028)

The second special turns to Moon Knight, with a twist. In the Marvel Zombies universe, the character wasn’t Marc Spector but Blade, who died in the series finale. That means someone new will take up the mantle, and Marvel isn’t saying who.

Marvel

The Last Guardian (Halloween 2029)

The final special is the biggest mystery. Marvel is keeping the Last Guardian’s identity completely secret, though Winderbaum promised it will be very exciting. Since several members of the Guardians of the Galaxy have already fallen in this universe, fan theories point to Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and even Kraglin.

A Familiar Director Returns

All three specials are directed by Bryan Andrews, who directed the original Marvel Zombies and episodes of What If…?. That should keep the same look and tone fans enjoyed the first time around. Releasing one special each Halloween also turns Marvel Zombies into a new spooky-season tradition, and you have plenty of time to rewatch the original series on Disney+ first.

More Marvel News From the Weekend

The panels didn’t stop there. Marvel also showed a new VisionQuest trailer ahead of its October 14 premiere, gave a first look at the Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again, and set a January 13 date for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2.
