VisionQuest Ultron Trailer: James Spader’s Villain Returns in “Ultron’s Got His Groove Back”

Some villains just won’t stay down. More than a decade after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios has given Ultron something he’s never had before: a trailer all to himself. Titled “Ultron’s Got His Groove Back,” it arrives days before VisionQuest debuts on Disney+, and it suggests the robot with a god complex hasn’t changed one bit.

Ultron Gets the Spotlight

James Spader returns as Ultron in the series, which premieres its first two episodes on October 14. The trailer mixes behind-the-scenes footage with fresh clips. Spader opens by reflecting on how it all began as a voiceover, and he says he’s back a decade later. He describes this version of Ultron as older and wiser, though what we see on screen leaves plenty of room to doubt that.

VisionQuest: Overview

Same Old Menace, New Look

The trailer introduces Ultron’s human avatar, played by Spader and sporting a heavy beard, inside Vision’s mindscape. When E.D.I.T.H.’s human avatar (Emily Hampshire) asks why he picked that form, his answer is a cheeky “Suits me.” It’s a fun wink, since Ultron famously chose to look like Spader in the first place.

But the humor doesn’t soften the threat. Other characters call him a monster, a devil and a genocidal maniac, and Ultron himself says he’ll sit back and watch the world burn. We also glimpse his classic metal body and a new ability to travel through space using disintegrating constructs. In one scene, Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica) appears to be in danger.

A Father-Son Bond With a Dark Edge

The most intriguing thread is Ultron’s relationship with Vision. Bettany describes it as a father-son, therapist-psychopath dynamic, and he jokes that Ultron is his psychopathic life coach. That fits, since Vision was originally meant to be Ultron’s next evolution in Age of Ultron.

At the end of that film, Vision destroyed Ultron’s body but actually uploaded him into his own mind. Spader says Ultron has spent the years since consuming the internet, television and history, and painting. That sounds almost peaceful, until you hear what he says in the trailer.

“Finish What I Started”: Should We Worry?

One line stands out. Ultron promises to finish what he started all those years ago, and what he started was global extinction. Back then, he concluded that humanity was the ultimate threat to peace and lifted the city of Sokovia into the sky to drop it like a meteor. That chain of events led to the Sokovia Accords, which still shape the MCU.

So the big question is whether Ultron is truly reformed or quietly manipulating Vision to secure a new body. Another is whether he ever escapes into the real world. The trailer hints at a Vision-versus-Ultron showdown, but how it ends is anyone’s guess.

What to Expect Next?

With the premiere just days away, there’s plenty to speculate about. Ultron could be a reluctant mentor, a manipulator or both.
