The Story: Surrender or Fight Back
The setup is simple and gripping. A grandfather used to living alone suddenly has to care for his two grandchildren. Before they can settle in, a ruthless gang of armed criminals from Jakarta storms the house and traps the family inside.
The film boils it down to one brutal choice: give in and hope for mercy, or teach the kids how to fight back. The title tells you which way the story leans. It’s a small-scale, high-pressure premise, and those are often the thrillers that hit hardest.
Lukman Sardi Leads the Fight
Lukman Sardi plays the grandfather. He is no stranger to Netflix audiences, having appeared in Photocopier, Borderless Fog and Nightmares and Daydreams, and he also stars in Yakin Nikah, which is available on the platform.
The supporting cast is deep and includes Callista Arum, Sulthan Hamonangan, Derby Romero, Donny Alamsyah (The Raid 2), Dennis Adhiswara, Erick Estrada, Ismi Melinda, Muhammad Nur Qomaruddin and Laras Sardi. Having a familiar action name like Alamsyah on the call sheet is a good sign for fans of Indonesian action cinema.
The Team Behind the Camera
Sidharta Tata directs and co-wrote the script with Khalid Kashogi. This is also his first collaboration with producers Kimo Stamboel and Edwin Nazir, and Mowin Pictures handles production services. A new creative partnership can bring fresh energy, so it will be interesting to see how the film’s tone comes together.
Why It Matters for Netflix’s Indonesian Slate?
Netflix’s 2026 Indonesian film lineup has been fairly quiet, and Never Surrender is set to bring a much-needed jolt of action. Netflix has already released a teaser trailer, so you can get a feel for the tension before the full film drops. If you enjoy contained survival thrillers, this one should go straight onto your watchlist.
