Karim Benzema, the highlight of France’s Euro 2020 campaign

While France were eliminated from Euro 2020 by Switzerland last night, they put on a fight for the ages. For Didier Deschamps, Karim Benzema was without a doubt the best performer in the tournament. And he showed his sheer brilliance by scoring the goal that drew them 1-1 shortly after half-time.

The pass from Kylian Mbappe was a bit behind the Real Madrid striker, but he displayed incredible control by dragging the ball in front despite being under pressure. Benzema then proceeded to chip Yann Sommer to score his third goal since returning to the national team.

His strike against Switzerland has been compared to Dennis Bergkamp’s goal in Newcastle back in the day. Many fans have gone on to say that his version of the strike is better than the Premier League version.

Benzema could’ve had his first goal since returning in their very first match against Germany, but it was ruled out for offside. Nevertheless, he put in an amazing shift in Munich and scored his first two official goals for France in the 2-2 draw against Portugal.

With four goals overall, Benzema is currently the second highest goalscorer in the competition despite being eliminated from the tournament. The fact that he is well into his thirties is almost irrelevant when you take into account the kind of performances he is putting in for both club and country.
