Marvel fans just got good news and bad news in the same breath. Avengers: Doomsday is coming to IMAX, but only in a handful of countries. If you were planning a big-screen December night out, read this first.
Doomsday Gets IMAX, But Dune Gets the Spotlight
Avengers: Doomsday opens in the U.S. on Friday, December 18. That is the same window as Dune: Part Three, which holds a three-week exclusive on IMAX screens. For American audiences, that locks Marvel out of the premium format at launch.
China is the exception. Dune 3 was pushed there to December 31, which frees up IMAX for a limited two-week run of Doomsday from December 16. Reports suggest it is one of only five international markets getting the format, and South Korea and Japan are believed to be among them.

| Detail | What We Know |
|---|---|
| U.S. release date | December 18 |
| Competing film | Dune: Part Three (3-week IMAX exclusivity) |
| IMAX in China | Two-week run from December 16 |
| Other IMAX markets | 5 in total, likely including South Korea and Japan |
| North America IMAX | Not at launch |
| Possible U.S. IMAX expansion | Early to mid-January |
| Avengers: Secret Wars | Worldwide IMAX planned for December 17, 2027 |
What Is Infinity Vision?
Disney’s answer is Infinity Vision. It sounds like a shiny new format, but it isn’t one like IMAX or 4DX. It is a Disney certification that a regular theater screen meets certain quality standards. It was tested in September with Avengers: Endgame Encore and returns for Doomsday.
Critics have called it a pricey rebrand of screens you already use. Even so, it reportedly makes up the biggest share of early pre-sales, so plenty of fans are buying in anyway.
Will the U.S. Get IMAX Later?
Probably, yes. Once Dune 3’s exclusive window ends, Doomsday could move onto IMAX screens in early to mid-January. Nothing is confirmed, so treat it as a strong possibility rather than a promise.
Marvel also plans to make up for this with Secret Wars, which is scheduled for IMAX worldwide. That date depends on production staying on track, and filming hasn’t started yet.
What Should You Do?
- Want IMAX on opening weekend? Check whether you live in one of the five markets.
- Happy to wait? January could bring the big screen to you.
- Want a launch-day seat? A standard or Infinity Vision screening is your safest bet.
