A quick correction first: your note says the release is “TBD 2026,” but that is out of date. Karavali has already come and gone in theatres, with a July 24, 2026 release, and a streaming date has since been announced.

What Is Karavali About?
The story is rooted in coastal Karnataka and centres on Kambala, the traditional buffalo race. In the film, the winner is awarded a prestigious chair passed down from a royal family, and it has stayed with the local landlord’s family for generations. The race is suspended for 30 years, until someone makes a fresh claim to the title. That sets up a drama of power struggles, revenge and pride.
The Trailer Hook
The trailer, released on July 7, opens with Prajwal Devaraj’s character ruling the race. Then it jumps three decades ahead and brings in Raj B Shetty. It hints at a revenge arc and a clash between two generations. The film also marks the first on-screen pairing of the two actors, which was a big draw for Kannada cinema fans.
A Film Rooted in Tulunadu
Set in the Tulunadu region, Karavali also touches on spirit worship and local traditions, along with themes of identity, survival and the old conflict between people and nature. Parts of it were reportedly shot at the historic Katapadi Kambala track. Gurudatha Ganiga makes his solo directing debut here, after co-directing an earlier film. To read up on the sport itself, see Kambala on Wikipedia.
