Indian Esports Teams Eye Global Dominance as IEM Katowice Legacy Grows

Indian Esports teams are quickly turning their sights toward international success, drawing motivation from the rich history of the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Katowice tournament, which began in 2007 in Poland. As the local scene grows, the professional environment is adapting to match the excitement of global circuits.

This shift couldn’t come at a better time, especially with Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) making its much-anticipated return to the Google Play Store on May 29, 2023, after a brief break due to government regulations.

The Evolution of Indian Esports Teams on the Global Stage

The road to international recognition has been paved by organizations like S8UL Esports. Founded in 2020, S8UL has evolved from a content-focused group into a competitive force, showing that Indian talent can connect regional achievements with global visibility, as reported by The Verge.

This transition is crucial for the long-term health of the sector. The aspiration to compete in events like the Esports World Cup, which boasted an impressive prize pool exceeding $60,000,000 USD in 2025, pushes our local teams to strive harder than ever.

Strategic Growth and the Esports Federation of India

The support from the Esports Federation of India (ESFI) gives our athletes a significant edge. Since gaining official recognition from the Indian Olympic Association in 2022, the federation has standardized training and tournament protocols, as highlighted by TechCrunch.

While climbing to the top is a challenge, the industry keeps expanding. Projections indicate that the market could hit $140 million USD by 2027, according to FICCI-EY 2023 reports. However, some analysts caution that growth may not be straightforward, citing the unpredictability of mobile-first markets as a potential obstacle.

Despite these challenges, data suggests that with more investment in infrastructure and grassroots efforts, India can rise above its current 17th-place global ranking.

Indian teams are now focused on turning their domestic success into consistent podium finishes at the world’s top LAN events. We expect to see a surge in specialized coaching roles over the next two years, helping to close the gap between Indian squads and their global counterparts.
