IND vs NZ: New Zealand’s Historic Test Win in India: Key Takeaways

IND vs NZ: In a thrilling Test match, New Zealand broke a 36-year-long drought by defeating India in Bengaluru by eight wickets. The win, powered by stellar performances from Rachin Ravindra and Tim Southee, has raised several talking points.

Let’s have a look into more details: IND vs NZ

1. Rachin Ravindra’s All Round Brilliance

Rachin Ravindra was the star of the match, contributing heavily with both bat and ball. His crucial 134-run knock in the first innings, coupled with a composed 39* in the second, anchored New Zealand’s innings at key moments. Ravindra’s calmness under pressure, particularly while chasing on a tricky Day 5 wicket, showcased his growing stature as a world-class all-rounder. His partnership with Tim Southee proved to be the game changer, setting New Zealand on a winning path.

2. India’s First Innings Collapse

One of the most pivotal moments of the match was India’s shocking collapse in the first innings. Opting to bat under overcast skies, India was bundled out for a mere 46, their lowest Test total at home. Matt Henry’s fiery spell (5/15) and William O’Rourke’s disciplined bowling (4/22) dismantled India’s batting lineup, setting the tone for New Zealand’s dominance. This collapse, reminiscent of India’s infamous 36 all-out in Adelaide in 2020, was the turning point in the match.

3. India’s Second Innings Fightback

Despite the poor start, India showed grit in their second innings. Sarfaraz Khan’s majestic 150, combined with Rishabh Pant’s blistering 99, gave India hope and a lead of 106 runs. Rohit Sharma (52) and Virat Kohli (70) also played crucial roles, but the introduction of the new ball led to a middle-order collapse, with India losing seven wickets for just 54 runs. The inability to capitalize on the momentum once again left the door open for New Zealand to take control.

4. New Zealand’s Bowlers Deliver at Key Moments

New Zealand’s bowlers were pivotal in this historic win. After India mounted a fightback in their second innings, it was the new ball that brought the Kiwis back into the game. Matt Henry and William O’Rourke’s late strikes on Day 4 dismantled India’s tail end, preventing the hosts from building a substantial lead. Tim Southee’s contributions with both the bat (65) and ball (1/8) were vital, further reinforcing his value as a seasoned campaigner.

5. Dropped Catches Hurt India

India’s fielding woes added to their misery in this match. Multiple dropped catches, including chances missed by KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, allowed key players like Devon Conway and Will Young to settle. These missed opportunities proved costly as both batters made crucial contributions in New Zealand’s innings, particularly Conway, who scored a vital 91. Improving their fielding will be crucial for India moving forward, especially with the demanding schedule ahead.

New Zealand’s first Test victory in India since 1988 marks a historic moment for the Kiwis and a learning experience for India. The visitors outplayed the hosts in key phases, showcasing a blend of patience, skill, and grit. For India, the loss will prompt introspection as they prepare for a challenging season. Both teams, however, will carry valuable lessons from this riveting contest.
