Suryakumar Yadav Set to Lose T20I Captaincy; Shreyas Iyer Emerges as Frontrunner to Lead

In a major shake-up for Indian cricket, Suryakumar Yadav is set to be removed as India’s T20I captain when the selectors meet to pick the squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. According to a recent report, star India batter Shreyas Iyer is all set to be awarded India’s T20I captaincy, replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the role, following some stellar performances in the format by the 31-year-old in recent years.

Why the Change in Captaincy?

The decision comes despite Suryakumar Yadav leading India to historic T20 World Cup glory earlier this year. uryakumar Yadav is reportedly going to be dismissed from his position as captain of the T20I team, despite leading India to the T20 World Cup 2026 victory. The BCCI selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has reportedly “run out of patience” with Suryakumar’s poor batting history, according to a Times of India article. 

As per a report in TOI, it is learnt that the selectors would have a meeting soon where they would pick the side that would tour Ireland and England just after the completion of the ongoing IPL 2026 season.

The decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav appears to be driven by several key factors: While Suryakumar successfully led the Men in Blue to the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026 titles, his batting statistics appeared to have painted a concerning picture for the selectors. Since taking over India’s full-time T20I captaincy in 2024, the veteran batter has aggregated 932 runs, including 6 fifties, at an average of 25.88 and a strike rate of 152.03 in 45 matches.

Beyond the captaincy, there are even doubts regarding his inclusion in the squad as a pure batter. Sources within the BCCI and Team India have also disclosed that Suryakumar has been dealing with a persistent wrist injury, reportedly playing through significant pain and discomfort.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Record as Captain

As India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav boasts an impressive record, winning 40 matches in 52 outings, with a win percentage of 76.9%, reflecting his consistency and tactical acumen on the international stage. Suryakumar Yadav maintains a record of never having lost a T20I series since inheriting the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.

Why Shreyas Iyer Is the Frontrunner

In contrast to Suryakumar’s struggles, Shreyas Iyer has enjoyed a successful IPL campaign. He led the Punjab Kings to six victories in their opening seven matches while contributing 333 runs in nine innings. With Shreyas Iyer being in his prime and the star batter putting in some brilliant performances in the format, which included him leading Punjab Kings to the final of the IPL 2025 and leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024.

While Shreyas Iyer is now the frontrunner for the leadership role, it is noted that he hasn’t participated in a T20I for India since December 2023. Iyer was retained for Rs 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2026 season.

BCCI’s Long-Term Vision

The decision is driven by the board’s focus on the next T20 World Cup cycle, Suryakumar’s recent batting form, and Iyer’s proven leadership record in the IPL. Though Suryakumar Yadav successfully guided Team India to a T20 World Cup title defence, the BCCI appears to be looking toward the future, aiming to groom a long-term leader for the side. 

Looking at the next multi-nation event, the BCCI would have its eyes set on the elusive gold medal at the LA28 Olympics, where cricket has made a comeback and will be played in the shortest format. Meanwhile, the next T20 World Cup is also scheduled in the same year itself. Since India is staring at a packed T20I calendar in the buildup to the T20 World Cup 2028 and LA Olympics in the same year, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is reportedly considering handing Iyer the reins for the upcoming assignments to ensure a unified leadership.

Upcoming Series for Team India

The selectors are set to meet soon to choose squads for India’s upcoming international assignments, which include two T20 matches in Ireland followed by a five-match T20 series in England. Thereafter, India squad will head to England for the five-match series starting on July 1.

According to reports, the BCCI wants to give Shreyas Iyer a return to the T20I team and make him captain, beginning with the post-IPL 2026 tour of England and Ireland.
