Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest Release Date, Director and Story: First GOT Movie Hits Theatres June 2029

Westeros is finally heading to the big screen. After the success of the television spin-offs, Warner Bros. has announced Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first-ever theatrical film in the franchise. For fans who have waited years for a cinematic Game of Thrones experience, this is the news they were hoping for.

What Is Aegon’s Conquest About?

The film is set centuries before the original HBO series and explores one of the most important chapters in Westerosi history: Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms. As the title suggests, the story centres on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror, who invaded Westeros alongside his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, to bring much of the continent under one rule. The conquest happened roughly 300 years before the events of the original series and about a century before House of the Dragon.

Aegon did not arrive alone. He came with three formidable dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, ridden by Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys respectively. Their presence was crucial to the Targaryen military campaign, so dragons are likely to be a major part of the film’s spectacle.

Who Is Making It?

Owen Harris will direct. He is no stranger to Westeros, having already directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The screenplay is being written by Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards and Andor. Casting details have not been revealed yet, so speculation about who will play Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys is wide open.

What Else Is Coming From Westeros?

Fans will not have to wait until 2029 for more. House of the Dragon’s fourth and final season has already been greenlit and is expected in 2028, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to return for a second season, likely in 2027. Together with the film, that gives the franchise a steady run of content over the next few years.

Why This Matters?

Moving from television to theatres is a big step for any franchise, and a story built around dragons and a continent-wide war feels made for the biggest screens. New viewers can start with the Game of Thrones overview on Wikipedia to learn about the world before the movie arrives.
