FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32: Portugal vs Croatia Match Report – Ramos’ Stoppage-Time Winner Seals Portugal’s Dramatic 2-1 Comeback Over Croatia

It was an all-action second half between Portugal and Croatia in Toronto, but it was the former who came out on top despite all the drama. Gonçalo Ramos came off the bench to snatch a dramatic 2-1 win for Portugal over Croatia in the World Cup last 32, setting up a blockbuster meeting with Spain in the next round.

Ivan Perisic had given Croatia a deserved lead, which was cancelled out by Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty, but Ramos’ late intervention was enough as Josko Gvardiol saw a late equaliser ruled out for offside at BMO Field in Toronto. First Half: Portugal Set the Tempo

All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric before the game, with one destined for their last dance on the World Cup stage. By taking the pitch, Ronaldo made history before a ball was even kicked, becoming the first player to feature in the knockout stage of the tournament aged 41 or older. Croatia’s starting XI had an average age of 30 years and 99 days, the oldest starting XI of a non-group stage match at the FIFA World Cup since Croatia themselves in the 1998 third-place match.

This was also the first match in FIFA World Cup history to feature three different players who have appeared in more than 20 World Cup matches. The match was Ronaldo’s 26th World Cup appearance, number 23 for Modric, and 21 for Ivan Perisic.

From the opening whistle, Portugal owned the ball and the territory. They finished with 61% possession and completed 532 accurate passes to Croatia’s 311. Bruno Fernandes saw a first-time fizzer pushed away by Dominik Livakovic before Renato Veiga sent a free header over the crossbar in a first half with few clear-cut chances. Portugal logged 90 final-third entries compared to Croatia’s 23, which explains the nine Portugal corners, but the scoreline remained 0-0 at the break.

Second Half: A Rollercoaster in Toronto

Croatia were reinvigorated after half-time. The introduction of Igor Matanovic gave them a new lease of life as he set up Mateo Kovacic’s poked shot at Diogo Costa. They got the goal their pressure deserved in the 53rd minute. Perisic brought down Josip Stanisic’s deflected cross to drill a low effort through Costa’s legs into the bottom-right corner.

At 37 years and 150 days, Perisic became the first Croatian player to score a goal at the FIFA World Cup at 35 years of age or older. His seventh World Cup goal also broke his tie with Davor Suker (six) for the most goals by a Croatian player in the competition’s history.

Three minutes later, the offside flag denied Croatia a second as Nikola Vlasic failed to get back onside before pulling it back for Matanovic to help over the line. Portugal then burst into life. Rafael Leão curled a stunning strike from the edge of the box towards goal, but with Livakovic beaten, he could only rattle the crossbar.

Ronaldo was also denied by the offside flag, setting off too early before dinking his shot over Livakovic. But he was not kept out in the 68th minute. Vlasic dragged Veiga to ground during a corner, a penalty was given following a VAR review, and the Portugal captain emphatically converted it.

In doing so, Ronaldo scored a goal in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in his career. The goal came on his 31st shot in knockout matches. His third goal of this year’s tournament means all other players aged 40 or older have combined for just one goal in the competition’s entire history (Roger Milla in 1994).

Goal Summary

Late Drama: Ramos Strikes, Gvardiol Denied

Croatia had the wind back in their sails after Ronaldo’s penalty, though. Costa made a superb stop to push Kovacic’s whipped shot onto the post before smothering Matanovic’s tight-angled effort. Petar Sucic then thought he had won it in the 80th minute, racing onto Kovacic’s defence-splitting pass and slotting a composed finish past Costa, but the flag denied Croatia for the second time.

Mario Pasalic flashed a header across the face of goal in the 89th minute, and that miss was punished five minutes later. Ramos rose above his defender to glance Leão’s delightful cross into the back of the net to make it 2-1 at 90+4′.

Ramos’ match-winning goal was the second-latest goal scored for Portugal in their World Cup history (after Silvestre Varela’s match-tying goal at 94:34 against USA in 2014). The striker has now scored four goals in just 187 minutes played at the FIFA World Cup. The only other player to have less than 200 minutes played and at least four goals in the competition’s history is Poland’s Ernst Wilimowski.

In the 13th minute of second-half stoppage time, there was almost another twist. Gvardiol stretched to send the ball past Costa, but Matanovic had got a deft flick on the cross into the box, and Pasalic, who teed up the defender, had strayed offside. The goal was ruled out following a VAR review.

Key Match Statistics

Portugal’s superiority came from repeat access to dangerous zones and period-by-period control. Yet Croatia hit more shots on target (6-3), reflecting how their direct approach produced clean looks. Croatia also created four big chances after the break. Touches in the penalty area slightly favored Croatia at 22 to 19.

This match was the 16th time that Portugal has trailed at any point in a World Cup match. It was just the second time they won one of those matches (also doing so against DPR Korea in 1966).

Player of the Match: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo earned Player of the Match honors. He completed 21 of 22 passes and scored the crucial penalty that leveled the match. His expected goals came in at 0.82, with expected goals on target at 0.92 from two attempts. Across four World Cup 2026 appearances and 351 minutes, Ronaldo now has three goals with a 20% goal conversion rate from 15 shots. He has covered 25.72 kilometers with a top speed of 33.71 km/h.

For the supporting cast, Diogo Costa made 5 saves (2 big saves) and prevented an estimated 0.55 goals. Nuno Mendes created four key passes and delivered 4 of 6 accurate crosses (0.51 expected assists). Rúben Dias completed 86 of 94 passes and won 5 aerial duels.

For Croatia, Perisic earned recognition with his historic goal and relentless wing work. Kovacic posted three shots and strong ball-carrying, while Modric (reportedly set to retire) added two key passes and eight recoveries.

Portugal were determined to walk away with a win, marking the one-year anniversary of Diogo Jota’s death by continuing their bid for a first World Cup title. Ronaldo dedicated the victory to his former teammate following the full-time whistle.

What it means

Portugal advance to face Spain in the last 16, a heavyweight tie that already feels worthy of a latter stage. Croatia, meanwhile, leave with the frustration of knowing they created enough moments to make life very difficult for one of the tournament’s contenders.

For all Croatia’s bravery, Portugal found the cleaner moments in the end. That made the difference.
