Netflix has officially canceled Ransom Canyon, the Texas-set romantic drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, after two seasons. The decision was first reported by Deadline on Thursday, 10 September 2026, just seven weeks after the show’s second season premiered.
Why the Show Was Cancelled
Ransom Canyon’s cancellation came down to a sharp decline in viewership between its two seasons. According to Deadline, the show’s second season opened with 4.1 million views in its first week, a 43% drop from the 7.2 million views Season 1 drew during its opening week back in 2025. Season 2 also spent three weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 list, compared to four weeks for the first season.

The show’s second season was already produced under tighter constraints than its debut run, arriving with eight episodes compared to the ten that made up Season 1, alongside a reduced budget and a reshuffled supporting cast. Despite those adjustments and season two being creatively better received internally, the steep drop in viewers ultimately made the show’s cost-to-viewership math difficult for Netflix to justify.

What the Show Was About
Based on Jodi Thomas’ popular novel series, Ransom Canyon followed three ranching family dynasties in a small Texas town as they navigated land disputes, rivalries, and matters of the heart. At the centre of the story was the on-again, off-again romance between rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) and musician Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), childhood friends turned love interests.

Season 2 picked up six months after the first season, with Staten fighting to reclaim his position as trustee of the family’s Double K Ranch, while Quinn wrestled with whether her future belonged in the small town or in New York City. The season ultimately closed with the pair reuniting, alongside a festival storyline that helped save the town, even as some threads, including a possible love triangle involving supporting character Ellie, were left open for a potential future that will no longer happen.
Cast and Crew
Alongside Duhamel and Kelly, the series featured Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Casey W. Johnson, Philip Winchester, and Justin Johnson Cortez, with James Brolin also part of the cast. April Blair created the series and served as showrunner and executive producer, alongside fellow executive producers Dan Angel, Bradley Gardner, and Joe Fazzio, with Duhamel and Kelly also holding executive producer credits.
Impact Beyond the Screen
The cancellation also affects the local production economy in New Mexico, where the series filmed. During production of Season 2 in 2025, more than 700 local residents were employed on the show, including 380 crew members, 40 principal actors, and 300 background actors.
