The storm cuts off communication and blocks reinforcements, leaving the pair to fight off the dealer’s men while dealing with the disaster outside.

Maelstrom has been in development for 33 years. Producer Jeff Robinov sold it as a spec script to Warner Bros. in 1993, when he was still an agent. At the time, Variety reported that the script went for roughly $225,000 to $625,000. Netflix has now revived the project.

The film is the first project under Robinov’s new deal with Netflix. Robinov, the former Warner Bros. Pictures president, is known for overseeing franchises such as The Dark Knight trilogy and The Hangover.

Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the film, bringing experience from his earlier work with Netflix. He directed Carry-On, the streamer’s hit thriller starring Taron Egerton.
