Chainsmoker Cat Season 2: Can Surging Manga Sales Save a Show Netflix Barely Noticed?

Sometimes a show is a hit everywhere except the chart that matters most. Chainsmoker Cat missed Netflix’s global Top 10, yet it got people talking and sent readers rushing to the manga. So where does that leave a second season?

Chainsmoker Cat S2: Renewal Status

The Netflix Numbers

The anime wrapped its first season just over a month ago and still has no renewal news. It generated plenty of online chatter at launch, but that didn’t translate into a global Top 10 spot on Netflix, so there’s no viewership data to point to.

The series did reach the Top 10 lists in 14 countries. It placed as high as 3rd in Japan and Hong Kong, and it also charted in markets such as Taiwan, Estonia, Lithuania, Vietnam and South Korea.

Why the Numbers May Undersell It?

Japan complicates the picture. The show was also broadcast on TV channels in Japan, including censored and uncensored versions, which split its audience. What’s on Netflix argues the true audience was likely much larger than Netflix alone suggests.

The Manga Boom

Here’s the encouraging sign. According to the report, manga demand has surged since the anime launched. Publisher Kodansha said the response was overwhelming and original manga stock is running low. That matters because strong source sales can support a renewal case.

Plenty of Story Left

With only about a third of the manga adapted, the studio has plenty of material for a second season. The adaptation also shuffles chapters instead of following them in strict order, so a sequel wouldn’t run out of story.

When Could Season 2 Arrive?

There’s no confirmation yet. What’s on Netflix suggests the Blu-ray release in February 2027 could be a key moment, so we may not hear more until spring 2027. If a renewal comes, anime seasons take a long time to produce, so expect a wait of a year or more.
