In India, the figure is harder to pin down because police reports routinely misclassify these crashes, but cycle-magazine estimates put the toll in the thousands as two-wheeler volumes keep climbing. The root cause is brutally simple. Car occupants check their mirrors for traffic, not for cyclists.

Cyclists ride close to parked cars to avoid moving traffic. The two meet at exactly the wrong moment, and a hinged door weighs between 12 and 18 kilograms moving at speed.

BMW’s Sensor-Driven Solution

BMW’s iX3, riding on the Neue Klasse architecture, fits external sensors into its driver-assistance suite. When a cyclist is detected approaching from behind within a defined arc, the system briefly locks the doors to prevent the occupant from pushing them open into the rider’s path.

The lock releases the moment the cyclist has cleared the vehicle. The trade-off is obvious: an adult passenger trying to exit in a genuine emergency — say, a vehicle fire — could be momentarily trapped if the sensor misreads the situation. BMW has not yet disclosed the override logic, the exact detection range, or what happens when the car’s 12-volt system fails. The sensors also draw from the same ADAS stack that powers automatic emergency braking, so a single camera or radar fault could disable both safety nets at once.

Why “Briefly” Is the Critical Word

Engineering-wise, the door latch is the easy part. The hard part is the dwell time. Hold the lock too long and passengers feel trapped; release it too soon and a fast-moving cyclist still gets hit.

BMW’s reported solution, a short window calibrated to the bike’s closing speed, depends entirely on the sensor data being right in the first place. There is a deeper problem: false confidence.

Cyclists who learn that the iX3 auto-locks may stop watching for opening doors, and the system is, after all, a one-make fix. A Škoda driver parked next to a cyclist offers no protection at all.

The same logic that makes the iX3’s solution elegant in isolation makes it meaningless in mixed traffic.

Comparable Approaches From Other Carmakers

Volvo and Hyundai have shipped less aggressive versions, and both have produced hard data: Hyundai’s Safe Exit Assist has been linked to a reported drop in dooring incidents on Korean roads, though figures are not yet public. Retrofit kits from third parties exist but require aftermarket wiring and rarely meet OEM crash standards.

What To Watch Before Booking

Buyers should ask three questions before the iX3 reaches showrooms. First, can the system be disabled, and does disabling it void any insurance discount? Second, what happens during a crash, when power may be cut? Third, will BMW extend the function to rear doors, where child-seat exits are most common?
