Thibaut Courtois is Set to Extend his Real Madrid Contract Until 2028

Thibaut Courtois is close to agreeing a new contract that would keep him at Real Madrid until the summer of 2028. According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, The Athletic and AS, the club and the goalkeeper have reached a preliminary agreement that adds 12 months to his current deal. The extension has not yet been officially confirmed by the club, but the reports suggest that the terms are largely settled and that formal confirmation is a matter of time.

The move reflects Real Madrid’s clear preference for stability in goal. The club has decided against waiting until the final stages of his contract to make a decision, and the reports indicate that the Belgian’s level of performance has removed any serious doubt about his place in the squad.

Why Real Madrid Want to Keep Him

Courtois has been the first-choice goalkeeper for much of his time in Madrid, and the club regards him as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Real Madrid have other options in goal, including Andriy Lunin, but the reports suggest the club sees no need to change its first-choice keeper while Courtois continues to perform at a high level.

The extension also reflects the club’s willingness to offer a veteran player a deal beyond a single year, a move that the reports describe as a departure from some of its recent practice with players over 30. The club’s decision signals a belief that Courtois still has the consistency and presence needed for the next phase of the squad’s development.

Contract Timeline

If the extension is completed as reported, Courtois will have spent a full decade at the Bernabéu by the time the new deal runs out. He would be 36 at that point, and the contract would mark one of the longest spells of any Real Madrid goalkeeper in the modern era.

A Record of Success

Courtois’s time in Madrid has been defined by silverware. Across 342 appearances for the club, he has won four La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, two European Super Cups and an Intercontinental Cup. Those honours have made him one of the defining figures in one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.

These achievements also explain why he has been given the chance to finish his career in Madrid. Courtois has long described the club as his ultimate destination, and the reports suggest that his desire to stay has not been affected by interest from other markets.

What the Extension Means for Real Madrid

For the club, a new contract means greater certainty in one of the most important positions on the pitch. A goalkeeper who has already been part of several major trophy-winning squads gives Real Madrid continuity in defence and a strong presence in the most decisive matches.

For Courtois, the extension buys him another season of security and the opportunity to add to his record in Madrid. It also gives him the chance to complete a decade with the club, a milestone that would place him among the most loyal players of his generation.

What Happens Next: A Deal Close to Completion

The next step is an official announcement from Real Madrid confirming the terms, including the final length of the contract. Until that happens, the agreement remains a reported one, and the exact details could still change before the deal is formalised.

If the contract is finalised, attention will turn to how Courtois manages his workload across domestic competitions and the demanding European calendar. His performances over the coming seasons will determine how long he remains first choice and how the club plans for goalkeeping succession beyond 2028.
