Why Giroud DESERVES to start for Chelsea against Leeds this weekend?

0

When asked about the fate of Olivier Giroud at Chelsea after the international break, Frank Lampard said that he was a vital part of the club going forward. If the Chelsea manager or anyone still had any doubts regarding Giroud’s capabilities, they have been silenced by his single-handed decimation of Sevilla.

“Four goals at this level and the quality of the goals, individual aspects from Olivier [Giroud] and team aspects in the first half, from back to front the team were great, amazing solo performance from Olivier,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“Olivier is reliable, full stop. Not just for us but his international goals for France, he’s up there with great French individuals, he’s got great statistics. I’m not too bothered about that in a way but I am bothered about what he gives us on the pitch.”

“There couldn’t be a team-mate there that the players are happier for because of the way Olivier is around the training pitch and in the games.”

Giroud became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League last night. He also became only the second player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League for Chelsea after Drogba. And only the Frenchman’s was perfect.

When asked about the possibility of Giroud continuing his brilliant form on the pitch through a start against Leeds in the league next, Lampard said:

“We’ll have to see – it’s a tight turnaround but it’s four goals in a game. It’s not just his performance but when you play him and utilise his strengths and his speed, there’s a real balance in the rest of the team.”

Considering that Werner and Abraham are also contesting a starting berth, the competition is no doubt difficult. However, Giroud now has the numbers on not one, but two occasions to back him up.

The 34-year-old is only seven goals behind Thierry Henry in becoming the all-time top scorer for France. If he manages to carry on this goalscoring form, it is certain that he will break Henry’s record in the days to come.

Lampard must give Giroud a chance to take the spotlight this weekend in the Premier League, to not only show his faith in the forward but to also help convince Giroud to stay at the club.

UEFA Champions League 2020-21: Matchday 5 Review

0

With only one matchday to finalize the teams heading into the last 16 of the tournament, matchday 5 of the Champions League played out to a conclusion last night. Here is what went down:

Results

  • Lokomotiv Moscow 1-3 RB Salzburg
  • Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Real Madrid
  • Atletico Madrid 1-1 Bayern Munich
  • Borussia Monchengladbach 2-3 Inter Milan
  • FC Porto 0-0 Manchester City
  • Marseille 2-1 Olympiacos
  • Atalanta 1-1 Mitjylland
  • Liverpool 1-0 Ajax
  • Krasnodar 1-0 Rennes
  • Istanbul Basaksehir 3-4 RB Leipzig
  • Sevilla 0-4 Chelsea
  • Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Lazio
  • Club Brugge 3-0 Zenit
  • Ferencvaros 0-3 Barcelona
  • Juventus 3-0 Dynamo Kyiv
  • Manchester United 1-3 PSG

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Real Madrid

The Ukrainian club managed to complete the double over the 13-time Champions League winners in the group stages of the match. Superb counter-attacking from Shakhtar absolutely blew Madrid out of the water and managed to seal another victory against Los Blancos.

Manor Solomon and Dentinho managed to get on the score sheet for the hosts while the visitors were wasteful in putting away their chances throughout the match, and clearly lacked direction in all areas of the pitch.

Their chances of surely dropping to the Europa League were saved by Inter’s victory over Gladbach to deny the Foals an R16 place on matchday 5 itself.

Istanbul Basaksehir 3-4 RB Leipzig

The two opening goals of the match for Leipzig were hilarious, with Yussuf Poulsen getting the credit for a deflected Marcel Sabitzer shot from out of the box. Nordi Mukiele didn’t finish a cross from Forsberg very well, but it had enough to beat the keeper.

Right before half-time, though, the hosts managed to pull one back thanks to a brilliant finish from Irfan Kahveci following a corner situation.

Dani Olmo showed great control and finishing accuracy to restore the two-goal margin next, but Kahveci managed to slot home another great goal to get the game on once again. The Basaksehir player scored a hat-trick to level things up next, but a goal from Alexander Sorloth in stoppage time sealed all the points for Leipzig.

This was certainly one of, if not the most entertaining matches from the group stages.

Sevilla 0-4 Chelsea

The match that was anticipated to be the most difficult contest for the Blues ended up being the easiest win for them. Olivier Giroud managed to become the oldest player to score a Champions League hat-trick, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo. His perfect hat-trick makes sure that Chelsea will finish at the top of the group.

Despite two heavily rotated teams from both managers, the Blues clearly had more quality on the pitch to shut the opposition out with a clean sheet to their name and score the goals themselves.

Edouard Mendy has the best goalkeeping stats this season in the competition, keeping 4 clean sheets out of 5 (joint best) and conceding the least amount of goals in the competition (1).

Best Player: Olivier Giroud (Chelsea)

It goes without saying that Olivier Giroud has been on fire in the Champions League. It was his goal that broke the deadlock in the 90th minute and won Chelsea the match against Rennes last week. He proved his worth once again in a Chelsea shirt, scoring four goals in the match.

Superb finishing in the first goal with the left foot found the corner of the net for Giroud. He then chipped the keeper with his right to double the lead. The third goal was a brilliant header, converting an inch-perfect cross from fellow countryman Kante. The Frenchman then scored a penalty to end the proceedings in the 81st minute.

Through to the Knockout Stages:

  • Bayern Munich (Group A)
  • Manchester City (Group C)
  • FC Porto (Group C)
  • Liverpool (Group D)
  • Chelsea (Group E)
  • Sevilla (Group E)
  • Barcelona (Group G)
  • Juventus (Group G)

Indian skipper Virat Kohli put a new feather in his cap. The 32-year-old achieved the feat in the third ODI against Australia at the Manuka Oval yesterday.

He became the fastest player to score 12000 runs in ODI cricket. He also broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar to reach the feat. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar has reached the milestone of 300 innings. Virat Kohli has done it in just 242 innings.

Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar Virat Kohli reaches a new milestone in ODI cricket

Virat Kohli started his ODI career in 2008 against Sri Lanka. He has played 251 ODI matches for India till now. Virat Kohli was just 23 runs away from reaching the milestone before yesterday’s match. He has played 63 runs knock as India set a target of 302 runs for the Aussies. Finally, India beat Australia by 13 runs and won the first game in the series after losing the first 2.

After the match, Virat Kohli said, “We were put under the pump in the first and second half of Australia’s innings. Look I think the pitch was much better here in terms of helping the bowlers and that’s why I think the bowlers did well here. We were clinical with the ball and in the field. Hopefully, we take the momentum forward. I would have liked to go on for a bit longer, but it was a great partnership between Pandya and Jadeja. The team needed that kind of a boost. You need those kind of moments, especially when you play against a team like Australia.”

OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro probably to launch in March, renders offer a close look at them

0

Recently, the upcoming OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro renders have been revealed. The renders show that the rear camera design is quite similar to the OnePlus 8T and Nord N series. There is no similarity between the 7 Pro and 8 Pro designs. We can witness four sensors (2 bigger prominent lenses and 2 smaller lenses) in that rear camera module. So, it is basically a quad rear camera setup that includes a wide-angle sensor, an ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a telephoto lens. The function of the fourth sensor is yet unknown. We can not see any rectangular lens, so there may not be a periscope lens in this module. Also, it is not quite sure whether the IR camera will make its return.

Now let’s talk about the display. What it looks that the upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro features a curved display rather than a flatter one. If we compare it to the OnePlus 8 Pro, it is expected to have a 6.7-inch diagonal curved display with a rumored refresh rate of 144Hz. On the other hand, the OnePlus 9 Pro will feature stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support. As per the renders, the regular OnePlus 9 will feature a flat display.

In terms of the OnePlus 9 renders, this model will be available in different color variants. Coming to the section, this phone will feature a triple rear camera setup (quad-camera for the Pro variant). Apart from it, other specifications are likely to be similar between the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones. Both of them will be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM (as per the Geekbench listing). In terms of the battery, there will be a support of 65W fast charging. As of now, OnePlus has not confirmed any date of releasing the OnePlus 9 series. But we can expect that the company may launch these two new smartphones in the upcoming March of 2021.
