ARM’s Battle with China CEO Continues, SoftBank Sale gets Complicated

0

SoftBank Group Corp.’s efforts to sell the Arm Ltd.’s China business to Nvidia Corp has been further complicated as the battle for control of the business is escalating with new lawsuits aimed at keeping the unit’s controversial Chief Executive Officer in power.

Almost a year ago in June, the dispute erupted after the board voted to oust Arm China CEO Allen Wu for conflicts of interest, but he refused to leave. Now the Chinese unit has filed lawsuits against three senior executives the board designated to replace Wu, who remains under control of the business, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

Wu fired the three men including Phil Tang, co-CEO, but they were subsequently reinstated by the board. Arm China is suing the trio, in the new lawsuits, demanding they return company property.

Arm China declined to comment on any ongoing legal cases or possible settlement talks, however, they did say that the three executives had caused “material damages” to the company and legitimate reasons were behind their termination.

Masayoshi Son, the founder of Japanese company SoftBank, agreed to sell the British chip designer to Nvidia for $40 billion last year, but the complex tussle has thrown into question the future of Arm.

The China dispute also raises questions about the world’s second-largest economy, China’s, willingness to protect foreign investment. Arm Ltd., whose semiconductor technology is the world’s most widely used for smartphones and is increasingly deployed in computers, sold a majority stake in the China unit to a consortium of investors, including Beijing-backed institutions. That has created further complications for the British firm to manage Arm China and Wu, who has support from local authorities in Shenzhen.

A stalemate seems to have been reached. Wu, a Chinese-born U.S. citizen, refused to sign settlement agreements worth tens of millions of dollars if he would leave the company, the sources have said. At the same time, two minority shareholders in Arm China linked to Wu have filed lawsuits to overturn his June 4 dismissal, they said.

“We are going through a leadership change in China; it’s taking time to resolve,” said Arm Ltd.’s Chief Executive Officer Simon Segars in an interview with Bloomberg Television recently. “It’s hard. But we are confident that’s going to get resolved.”

Arm China said in a statement that Wu’s position “is compliant with legal registration and confirmed by China law and regulations.”

According to Bloomberg, “the standoff accords a relatively unknown executive outsized influence over one of the industry’s most important pieces of technology, in the world’s biggest internet and semiconductor market. Chinese companies need unfettered access to Arm’s products to push forward with the country’s attempts to make itself more independent in chip technology, an area where it’s largely reliant on imports.” Beyond resolving the stalemate related to the leadership, SoftBank and Nvidia will also need Beijing’s signoff to seal their longstanding deal, and it’s unclear whether Wu’s presence would complicate that.

Local laws also have a hand in Wu’s hold on Arm China, which makes it difficult to shift control of a company unless you’re physically in control of the registration documents and company stamp. Wu has refused to give the materials necessary up and has used company funds to pay for legal fees incurred in his attempt to fight off his dismissal.

Arm China said payment of legal fees “is made in compliance with company policies as well as China laws and regulations.”

His ultimate goals appear to be immunity from subsequent legal action and a large cash payoff, according to people who’ve spoken with him. Wu has told local staff he’s not going anywhere and recently gave employees Chinese New Year cash presents in a red envelope with his surname on it, which can be interpreted as a precautionary move to increase loyalty. However, Arm China clarified that the money came personally from Wu to show his appreciation to colleagues, a tradition at Chinese New Year in the country.

In late May, hearings in the case against the three executives are expected to take place. Separately, Arm China’s two minority shareholders have sued the Chinese entity in Shenzhen to nullify the board’s decision to remove Wu.

Son told investors as recently as February that he expects to close the Arm sale and “I don’t have any Plan B.”

The Chinese government has not made any clarifications about its position on the Arm China leadership struggle. However, Arm China has several government-backed shareholders including sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp. and the Silk Road Fund.

Segars said that the ten-month standoff hasn’t hurt Arm’s business in China and that the prolonged process of changing leadership in China is because of lack of travel for face-to-face meetings during the pandemic.

“When we announced the deal in September, we said it would take about 18 months,” he said. “We remain confident in that timeline.”

‘Apple iPad Mini 6’ new renders have been disclosed

In our previously covered article, the alleged dummy images of the upcoming iPad Mini model became viral. It has seen that the display is thick bezels, a physical Home button, and also a design that is very similar to the predecessor. The new renders were received from some sources which are not though 10% legit. Some alleged images were listed for the screen protector of the iPad mini 6.

However, without the leaked images, we also have seen some construction which was seen with a more attractive design with the sharp edges, and also the backside of the edges is not the curvy type. After seeing those images, the users also have found many similarities with the iPad Pro 2020 and the new iPhone 12 series design.

At the top, there is a power button and a volume button on the right side. The selfie camera is inside the bezels. One thing is sure that the display is quite different from the last model that we have seen in January.

Apple iPad Mini 6 's 3D models feature Touch ID similar to older models

From some older reports, it was informed that the iPad mini 6 would have the punch-hole display on the upfront and also hosted with an in-display fingerprint sensor facility (Touch ID on the Display). But currently a Japanese website Mac Otakara has informed that the iPad mini will be build up with iPad Air 3 design, and it will have the Touch ID on the home button which is missed by the new renders.

It has been informed that the iPad mini 6 will be developed with either 8.5-inch or 9-inch display, it is assumed 8.4-inch is more preferable. It will be an upgraded model from the 7.9-inch screen based on the iPad mini 5. It is expected that Apple will release this model with the lighting port in 2021.

Last year, a Touch ID was brought by Apple on the power button with the iPad Air 4 and it is still unknown that which of the options Apple would choose for the latest iPad mini 6. At last, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares, iPad mini alongside the latest ‘Pro’ model will be launched with a mini-LED display facility, after that there is no other report release on this topic.

LG will supply OLED TV panels to Samsung starting from Q2 2021: Reports

LG has finally moved away from its smartphone business and has given full attention to its other electronic item and raw materials. A recent report says that Samsung has signed a partnership with LG in which LG will supply OLED TV panels to Samsung from the beginning of Q2 2021. LG has been doing pretty well with its television business as well as display panels. That’s why, the South Korean tech giant Samsung has confirmed that they will buy around one million OLED TV panels from LG, the rival of Samsung as well as the market leader, supply will get started from the second quarter of 2021.

As per the discussion between the officials of both the companies, it looks like the deal will last for long as by 2022, Samsung to receive around four million OLED TV panels from LG. LG has recently moved away from its smartphone manufacturing and that’s why the company will use most of its labor in making these OLED TV panels to supply Samsung. Apart from Samsung, there are other companies as well who rely on the display panels of LG, such as Sony, Hisense, and Vizio. These are some of the renowned customers of LG and the demand is getting higher and higher. As per reports, around 8 million units, LG is going to manufacture by the end of this year.

Now, most of the TVs from Samsung which are a bit high-end possess the OLED panel. However, the Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED) and MicroLED TV panels are there as well.

AMD’s Ryzen 9 5950X has its prices higher than the Burj

The amazing 16-core, 32-thread AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is on everyone’s must-buy list, and everyone is looking to purchase the product for a reasonable price. However, it’s also true that the 2021 global chip shortage, caused by a combination of the coronavirus pandemic, companies shifting to a work from home strategy, and previously unpredictable rocketing demand, has led to much-wanted PC parts run in short supply.

Out of all the components, especially high-end units like the Ryzen 9 5950X CPU and GeForce RTX 3090 GPU, are being sold at greatly inflated prices. According to sources, the PC builders in the UK will have to pay a price of £750 (US$1,028/AUD 1,349) for the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X. It’s interesting, considering the price of the card set by AMD is just US$799.

And if any retailer puts up the card for the MSRP, then the cards will be out of stock in seconds. Most of the stocks available are either being sold for outrageous prices or are available at reasonable prices but are actually out of stock.

A listing on eBay for multiple units of the Ryzen 9 5950X has a “buy it now” offer at £1,085.49 (US$1,488/AUD 1,952) per part, while a retailer called OnBuy has put up a price tag of £1,099.95 (US$1,508/AUD 1,978).

A retailer has even set up the AMD’s Ryzen 9 5950X at an insane price of £1,480.72 (US$2,030/AUD 2,662). It seems that the retailers are just utilizing an age-old business tactic of price hiking when demand exceeds supply.

AMD is looking to increase the supply of their cards and CPUs, and all it will take is a little bit of time. What PC makers have to do now is wait for the supply to catch up to the demand.

NVIDIA’s GTC 2021 announcement video has a hidden message inside it

NVIDIA’s GTC 2021 announcement was made recently, and it seems that some overly excited tech enthusiast is claiming to have deduced a hidden message inside the announcement video.

According to sources, when the video was closely inspected, the flashing lights in the tweet were a hidden morse code message. In their announcement video, NVIDIA had the following line, which seemed like it might have something to do with a clue that would drop later:

And, to have a little quick fun, we’ve added a few surprises – so be on the lookout. Watch the @NVIDIAGTC Twitter handle for clues and more details.

Upon closer look, the blinking bulbs form a golden neuron (usually sued to depict deep neural networks). The blinking lights are actually in morse code, and each bulb represents a single word. The decoded blinking pattern gets the following results:

The blinking lights spell out “HIDDEN TREASURE HIDDEN TREASURE“.

It could mean anything; however, if the code is something to go by, we can have a scavenger hunt on our hands, much similar to what Intel did with their Xe graphics card. The following two videos were also part of the announcement, and it seems that tech enthusiasts are surfing through them to find some new clues regarding the secret message.

OneWeb, SpaceX Satellites Dodge Collision in Space Through Last Minute Communication

0

In the race to expand their new broadband-beaming networks in space, two satellites from the fast-growing constellations of rival companies, OneWeb, and SpaceX’s Starlink, came dangerously close to each other in orbit on March 30th, somehow avoiding a collision, representatives from the US Space Force and OneWeb said. It’s the first occurrence of such a collision-avoidance event for the two rival companies.

Just five days after OneWeb launched its latest batch of 36 satellites from Russia, “red alerts” from the US Space Force’s 18th Space Control Squadron were received by the company, warning of a possible collision with a Starlink satellite. Because OneWeb’s constellation operates in higher orbits around Earth compared to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink satellites, the company’s satellites must pass through SpaceX’s mesh of Starlink satellites.

A 1.3 percent collision probability alert was indicated by the Space Force, with the two satellites coming as close as 190 feet — a dangerously close proximity for satellites in orbit. Unimaginable calamities can occur if satellites collide in orbit, a cascading disaster that could generate debris and send them on crash courses with other satellites nearby.

Currently, a lack of national or global authority that would force satellite operators to take action on predicted collisions is causing an issue. Space Force’s urgent alerts sent OneWeb engineers into a frenzy. They emailed SpaceX’s Starlink team to coordinate maneuvers and send the two satellites at safer distances from one another.

“COORDINATION IS THE ISSUE. IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO SAY ‘I’VE GOT AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM.’”

According to OneWeb’s government affairs chief Chris McLaughlin, SpaceX disabled its automated AI-powered collision avoidance system to allow OneWeb to steer its satellite out of the way while coordinating with OneWeb. This automated system has sparked controversy, raising concerns from other satellite operators who say that it gets difficult to coordinate and know which way the system will move a Starlink satellite in the event of a close approach. “Coordination is the issue,” McLaughlin says. “It is not sufficient to say ‘I’ve got an automated system,’ because the other guy may not have, and won’t understand what yours is trying to do.”

Satellites OneWeb, SpaceX Satellites Dodge Collision in Space Through Last Minute Communication

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has roughly 1,370 Starlink satellites in orbit out of an estimated 12,000-satellite network of global broadband coverage. OneWeb has launched 146 satellites so far, operating in higher orbits around Earth, of the roughly 650 it plans to send into orbit for a similar global network. Amazon has pledged to join the same race, with plans of sending over 3,000 satellites in LEO.

“This event was a good example of how satellite operators can be responsible given the constraints of global best practices,” says Diana McKissock, the head of the Space Force 18th Space Control Squadron’s data sharing and spaceflight safety wing, according to The Verge. “They shared their data with each other, they got in contact with each other, and I think in absence of any global regulation, that’s… the art of the possible.”

“WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING IT IF YOU HAVE TO TURN IT OFF WHEN THERE’S GOING TO BE A POTENTIAL COLLISION?”

McKissock has given SpaceX credits where it’s due as the aerospace manufacturer has made efforts to increase its transparency in orbit; the company currently provides location data of its satellites to other operators. But for avoiding collisions, its automated system is a closed book. Openness and coordination are of the utmost need here, analysts and operators say.

“What is the point of having it if you have to turn it off when there’s going to be a potential collision?” Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation says, adding that who would be held responsible if a collision actually occurred is still a mystery owing to the lack of an international framework.

Satellite maneuvers in space are common, but worry in the industry is mounting as top companies race to toss more satellites into space. And this Starlink close call isn’t the first, a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite had to move out of the way of a Starlink satellite, in 2019, to avoid a potential collision. SpaceX said at that time that it didn’t move its satellite because of a computer bug that prevented proper communication with ESA.

“IT’S JUST CROSSING YOUR FINGERS”

“OneWeb and others will have to transit through Starlink to reach their destinations, so SpaceX needs to ensure now that other satellite operators can do that safely,” says Caleb Henry, a satellite industry analyst at Quilty Analytics.

McKissock says the 18th Space Control Squadron is fully aware of the industry concerns with SpaceX’s autonomous avoidance approach. “So it’s been interesting,” she says. “But like I said, I’m glad they talked to each other. The scary situation is when one of the operators is not communicative, and then it’s just crossing your fingers.”

Two managers reactions to Real Madrid beating Barcelona 2-1

0

Real Madrid came out on top of the El Clasico and completed a double over Barcelona this season. Zidane were without Ramos, Varane, Carvajal and Hazard but he was spot on with his tactics and strategy.

Madrid put body behind the ball which made it difficult for Barcelona to open up any chances in the first half. On the other hand, whenever Real Madrid were attacking, Barcelona were having a tough period.

Karim Benzema scored an excellent goal by a heel flick which will be remembered for a long time, and Kross made it 2-0 via a deflection from his free-kick. The scoreline could have been different as both the teams hit the woodwork on multiple occasions.

benzema Two managers reactions to Real Madrid beating Barcelona 2-1

Speaking to Movistar, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane gave his opinion on the result that sent his side top of LaLiga.

Zidane said: “It was a great game. It’s true that it was tough out there but we got a deserved win. We had chances to get a third but it’s a very deserved victory. In the end, the referee said it wasn’t a penalty for Barcelona, and he decided that and that’s it. We had lots of chances to score more.”

“Before the game, they were ahead of us [in the table]. We’re not only going to talk about the referee but instead about what we did on the pitch. With Valverde, we had one more in midfield but also out wide. He’s really quick and that was the plan. Benzema has the talent and quality, he has so much quality. We have to enjoy tonight and the result against Liverpool because we worked hard for these two victories.”

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman also gave his opinion on the second half incident between Ferland Mendy and Martin Braithwaite.

Koeman said to Movistar: “Barcelona fans that have seen the game will be angry and really angry because of the refereeing decisions. We weren’t good going forward or defending in the first half but we picked it up in the second.”

“The penalty is so clear, the penalty is so clear, however, we have to accept it and we have to shut up. The penalty is such a clear penalty and there’s no VAR. And everyone thinks it’s a penalty, is it a penalty? do you think it’s a penalty?”
