RCB brainstorming over months for its Women’s Premier League auction

Appointing former India cricketer Vanitha VR and having a detailed list of 100 women cricketers was the key: RCB Chairman Prathmesh Mishra

We got our auction dynamic 120% correct: Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket Operations, RCB

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) took an aggressive yet confident approach in acquiring a team that is a mix of the world’s top and most talented 18 players during the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction on Monday in Mumbai.

Backed with strong homework, research, and scouting over months, RCB had a clear-cut plan going into the auction of the first-ever edition of the WPL. Sticking to the strategy of giving shape to a bold squad, RCB opened their innings with the buy of distinguished Indian opener Smriti Mandhana (INR 3.40 CR), who also happened to become the most expensive buy not only at WPL but among all other women’s cricket leagues in the world.

Following the acquisition of the two-time ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, the team proceeded to add notable international names to their squad including the Australian duo of all-rounder Ellyse Perry (INR 1.70 CR), and medium pacer Megan Schutt (INR 40 lakh), New Zealand’s captain Sophie Devine (INR 50 lakh), England’s skipper Heather Knight (INR 40 lakh) and South African all-rounder Dane Van Niekerk (INR 30 lakh).

The young and emerging talented wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh (INR 1.90 crore) and right-arm pacer Renuka Singh (INR 1.50 crore) were among the significant Indian additions to RCB’s star-studded roster.

In line with their commitment to giving more chances to raw talents from India, as emphasised by Director of Cricket Operations, Mike Hesson, RCB also signed wrist-spinner Asha Shobana (INR 10 Lakh), promising off-spinner Shreyanka Patil (INR 10 Lakh) and all-rounder Kanika Ahuja (INR 35 Lakh).

Speaking about the first-ever WPL auction, Prathmesh Mishra, Chairman, RCB said, Buying a women’s team was always on the cards for RCB and we started putting the puzzles together months in advance before WPL team tender. Appointing former India cricketer Vanitha VR as our scout was a key in that process. She comes with huge experience and knowledge of the domestic circuit as well as the contemporary cricketers from world over. Her inputs and our “RCB Hinterland” scouting process together ensured we started our evaluation process way ahead of time. However, with the lack of readily available data on women’s cricket, we had to put the prospective players through multiple scouting layers, we believe in multiple eyes, multiple times as our guiding principle, before shortlisting the top 100 names, who would be the best fit for RCB’s Play Bold philosophy.

“Smriti Mandhana was at the center of this plan and I am glad that we have nailed a team comprising of experienced and bold players who not only represent a champion’s mindset but also resonate with our core brand philosophy of going all out. The mix of young and dynamic talents will give us the flexibility to experiment and take bold approaches. The reactions that we have been receiving since the auction from our fans have been phenomenal and I am happy that we could achieve what we had set out for. And now is the time to get cracking with an amazing maiden season of WPL Season.”

Speaking about the buys and the strategy behind the aggressive bidding at the auction, Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket Operations, RCB, said, “Not only did we get our auction dynamics right but we have also surpassed our expectations. The team we have picked is not just 100% but 120% on target with what we have set out. Our scouting team definitely had a big role in going out and getting eyes on the players worth going after, finding the raw talents and being confident to polish them to accomplish the vision mix. Smriti [Mandhana] can play bold and is very well respected among Indian players and overseas. Ellyse Perry is a very experienced and a power player too. She can also bat anywhere in the batting order between opening to six;  can bowl bouncers and has a vast experience of playing in India. She is someone who will also add more leadership value within the group. This is an exciting group of cricketers we have amongst us and I am super proud to be part of this team.”

Smriti Mandhana: The Most Expensive Player of WPL Auction 2023

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction was an exciting day filled with drama and fierce bidding wars. One player in particular stood out, captivating the attention of franchises everywhere. Smriti Mandhana, the Indian opener and destructive batter, was the most expensive player of the 2023 WPL auction, bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping sum of ₹3.4 crore.

Mandhana was the first player to go under the hammer and was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a whopping 3.4 crores, the highest-priced player of the auction so far. After fierce bidding from Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, it was RCB who outpriced their rivals to rope in the star batter. Mandhana was slotted for a base price of 50 lakhs, but the bidding war between the two teams saw the price skyrocket.

Mike Hesson, the coach of RCB, expressed his joy at getting Mandhana in the team. He said, “Everyone knows Mandhana and Perry, we were pretty committed to the couple of people we wanted to get. We’re very happy to get such quality players. It’s a dream result for us to get Mandhana, Perry, and Devine. Smriti has got plenty of captaincy experience and is familiar with the Indian conditions, so she is highly likely to be captain.”

One interesting aspect of this purchase is the similarity between Smriti Mandhana and Virat Kohli with RCB. Both batters are known for their aggressive and destructive batting styles and coincidentally wear the No. 18 jersey.

Here’s a closer look at the talented cricketer Smriti Mandhana who stole the limelight of the WPL auction:

International Career

She made her One Day International debut in 2013 against Bangladesh and her Test debut in August 2014 against England at Wormsley Park. She helped India win the match by scoring 22 and 51 in her first and second innings, respectively. In the second ODI game of India’s tour of Australia in 2016, Mandhana scored her first international hundred (102 off 109 balls) but India lost the match. She was also the only Indian player to be named in the ICC Women’s Team of the Year 2016.

In the 2017 World Cup, Mandhana made a successful comeback after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture injury sustained during her time at the WBBL. She started the World Cup with a score of 90 against England in Derby and followed it up with her second One Day International hundred against West Indies (106*).

Club Career

In September 2016, Mandhana signed a one-year deal with Brisbane Heat for the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and became one of the first two Indians to be signed up for the League. However, she got injured while playing against Melbourne Renegades in January 2017, ruling her out of the rest of the tournament. Despite this, she ended the season with 89 runs in 12 innings.

In June 2018, she signed for Kia Super League defending champions Western Storm and became the first Indian to play in this league.

Records

Smriti holds several records in her name. In March 2018, she broke her own record for scoring the fastest fifty for India in a Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) fixture, taking just 25 balls in the opening match of the tournament against England. Her previous record was against Australia women in the 2017-18 India women’s Tri-Nation Series where she took 30

With her skills and talent, she has not only made a name for herself in the Indian cricket team but has also made the country proud with her international performances. With her acquisition by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL auction of 2023, we can expect more great things from this talented cricketer in the future. Whether she continues to break records or inspire the next generation of women cricketers, Smriti Mandhana is a player to watch out for!

What has gone wrong for Eden Hazard at Real Madrid, since 2019?

0

Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid might go down as one of the most disastrous transfers in football history. The Belgian, who was once considered the best in the Premier League, has failed to live up to his former self at Real Madrid. And now, he has suffered his 18th injury since signing for the club in 2019.

The winger has only one year left on his contract at the end of the season, and a change in scenery could be on the cards. Real Madrid have not allowed him to leave on loan, but could part with him in the summer since he hasn’t been counted on even when he has been available in most games.

What has gone wrong for Eden Hazard at Real Madrid?

After signing for the Spanish giants, Hazard arrived overweight for three off seasons. And this was followed by struggles for fitness and with injuries that prevented him from reaching his true potential.

Eden Hazard has missed 75 games, and counting, for Los Blancos over the last three-and-a-half years. The Belgian most recently suffered a patellar tendinosis in his left knee, and is being kept under observation.

The winger has scored only seven goals since joining the club, and has not played a single minute in El Clasico despite nine encounters being played with Barcelona since 2019.

Considering the player that he once was, it is a very sad decline indeed. And at 32, it seems unlikely that he will be able to recapture his form ever again.

Sergi Roberto close to signing renewal with Barcelona until 2024

0

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Sergi Roberto to extend his contract until 2024. The versatile full-back and midfielder is considered a valuable part of the squad by head coach Xavi Hernandez, and he is very close to officially signing a new deal with the club.

Roberto was set to leave last summer itself, but Xavi asked him to stay for another year. He took a pay cut to continue with the club, and is now expected to sign on for another year at the request of the head coach.

Sergi Roberto to sign new deal with Barcelona

“We’re close on a renewal for Roberto, a new deal will be agreed soon. It’s great to have a player who can help like he always does”, Xavi said when asked about his future.

The 31-year-old was offered an extension earlier this season, which he refused. But now, he has been persuaded to continue with an improved offer. The documents are now being prepared for the formalities to be completed.

Opportunities for Sergi Roberto have faded away as the campaign has gone by. Jules Kounde has been preferred by Xavi in many games over the Spaniard. However, his versatility makes him a player that can be brought on in a variety of situations.

And as things stand, he is set to continue with the Catalonian side until June 2024 before trying to find a new club.

Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United with £40 million loss expected

0

Both Manchester United and Harry Maguire are in agreement that there needs to be a transfer for the player in the summer. Things have absolutely not gone according to plan for the centre-back since joining from Leicester City for a record £80 million fee.

Although he has been a regular in the England national team under Gareth Southgate, things have been quite poor at Manchester United. And since the start of the season, his place has been taken by Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane. Most of his appearances have been limited to cameos on the pitch.

Harry Maguire to push for a summer exit from Manchester United

Maguire recently made only his fifth start in the Premier League this season. He kept a clean sheet against Leeds, but it simply isn’t enough for a player that is approaching 30 and intends to continue with the national team.

As a result, United are resigned to losing him for around half the fee he was signed for. But considering the inconsistent form he has been showing, a bid worth £40 million might be hard to come by as well.

‘It’s not about me, it’s about the club being successful and I want to be a part of it,’ Harry Maguire said.

‘I’m the captain and I put the team miles before myself. Whether I’m playing or not, I want the team to do well.

‘I’m still getting my minutes. Everyone wants to start games, and it’s disappointing when you don’t. You have four international centre-backs at this club and there will always be two who are unhappy. I just have to be ready for when the chance comes.’
