Baththa Akka on Netflix: Vijay Sethupathi’s Gangster Comedy and Keerthy Suresh’s Crime Saga

If your watchlist needs a South Indian double bill, Baththa Akka is it. These are two separate titles that landed on Netflix back to back: a gangster comedy-drama and a gritty female-led crime series. Here’s your quick, no-confusion guide.

Baththa vs Akka Overview

Baththa: A Gangster Stuck in a School Toilet

Set in 1986 Madras, the film follows Baththavachalam, a feared local gangster played by Vijay Sethupathi. His fearsome reputation means nothing when an eight-year-old boy accidentally locks him inside a school toilet. What follows blends laughs with real emotion.

It marks the third collaboration between Sethupathi and director Balaji Tharaneetharan. The film is presented by Atlee and Star Studio18, and reportedly collected over Rs 35 crore in theatres, which makes it a quiet sleeper hit. For background on the actor, see the Vijay Sethupathi Wikipedia page.

Akka: Power, Gold and Women in Charge

Akka brings together Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte in a period gangster drama about the Akka gang, which controls gold smuggling and political power. It’s a female-led crime saga with a strong cast and a fresh take on a genre usually dominated by male leads.

Which One Should You Watch First?

Or do both: laugh first, then lose sleep.
