What Is Baththa About?

The story is set in Madras in the late 1980s. Baththavachalam, played by Vijay Sethupathi, is a feared local figure who commands respect through intimidation. Young Sabhari, who lives in the same neighbourhood, is terrified of him.

Then comes the twist. In an attempt to retrieve a confiscated toy, Sabhari sneaks into his school early one morning and accidentally locks a bathroom door from the outside. Baththa is trapped inside. What follows is a mix of fear, comedy and an unexpected bond between the boy and the man everyone dreads.

It’s a premise that promises both laughs and heart, which is what makes it worth the watch.

Cast and Crew

Along with Vijay Sethupathi, the film stars Master Sai Prithviraj in a lead role. The supporting cast includes Lijomol Jose, Baby Sahasra Shree, Santhy Balachandran, Hari Krishnan, Vishnu Govindan, Arjun Chidambaram and Ajay Ghosh.

Balaji Tharaneetharan wrote and directed the film. It’s co-produced by Atlee, the filmmaker behind Jawan. Selvakumar SK handles the cinematography, and R. Kalaivanan edits.

Who Should Watch It?

If you enjoy character-driven comedies with an emotional core, this one fits the bill. It’s also a good pick if you missed it in theatres or want to rewatch it with family.
