Jailer 2 Box Office: Rajinikanth’s Rs 690 Crore Blockbuster Becomes Kollywood’s Biggest Film Ever

Records are made to be broken, and sometimes the person breaking them is the one who set them. Rajinikanth has just done that. His latest, Jailer 2, now sits at the top of the Tamil box office, and it didn’t need long to get there.

Jailer 2: The Record Falls

Jailer 2 has grossed about Rs 443 crore in India and roughly Rs 247 crore (around USD 26 million) overseas. That puts its worldwide gross at about Rs 690 crore. In trade language, that makes it an industry hit, the biggest Kollywood film of all time.

The film overtakes 2.0, the previous champion, which grossed Rs 663 crore worldwide in 2018.

Look at that climb. In 30 years, the record went from Rs 65 crore to nearly Rs 700 crore, and Rajinikanth’s films hold most of the milestones along the way.

Why This Feels Bigger Than a Number?

Every industry hit of the 21st century in Tamil cinema has been headlined by Rajinikanth. Even in the 1990s, the only industry hit without him was Indian. Baasha, Thalapathi and Annamalai all had him in the lead.

His first industry hit came sometime in the 1980s, and the latest arrives in 2026. That’s close to 50 years of box office supremacy across generations of audiences. Other industries have several stars sharing the top spot, while in Tamil cinema Rajinikanth has largely stood there alone for 35 years.

A Fitting Chapter for the Superstar

Jailer 2 is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and follows “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, the character fans fell for in the original Jailer. It also features SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and a string of cameos. Its success shows that audiences still turn out in huge numbers for a good mass entertainer, especially one carried by a legend.

For fans, the bigger question now is what comes next. Rajinikanth already has Dharman and a film with Kamal Haasan lined up, so the superstar’s streak looks far from over.
