Sanjay Gupta’s Family Appeals for Privacy: Wife Anuradha Lekhi Gupta Asks for Compassion for Grieving Children

When grief becomes public, it rarely gets the room it deserves. After the passing of filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, his family has made a heartfelt request: understand the pain behind a moment that went viral, and give their children the space to grieve.

What Happened?

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta died on 30th October at the age of 59, following a fatal head injury at his residence in Mumbai’s Versova. Hours later, a video from the funeral began circulating online. It showed his daughter, Dalai, reacting to paparazzi gathered outside the venue. The clip drew attention, and so did the reactions to it.

She also clarified that Sanjay suffered a fatal head injury in an accidental fall, and described how deeply he loved his family and children, who are adolescents and have suddenly lost their father.

Why Dalai Reacted the Way She Did?

Anuradha explained that her children grew up away from the limelight and are not used to the intense attention of paparazzi culture. In the middle of mourning, the sudden intrusion into their privacy left them deeply distressed.

She acknowledged that some of their reactions may have been directed at members of the media, and expressed sincere regret for any hurt caused. The message was clear: this was not about anger at anyone, but about children overwhelmed by loss.

A Request for Understanding

Anuradha asked everyone to see these reactions for what they truly are: the expressions of grieving children trying to come to terms with an irreparable loss. She requested that people excuse them and delete any content that could leave lasting emotional scars on young minds. Above all, she asked for privacy, compassion and space.

What We Can Learn From This Moment?

This situation raises a point worth thinking about:

• Grief has no script. People, especially young people, react in ways they may not understand themselves.
• Viral clips lack context. A few seconds of video rarely show the full story.
• Sharing has consequences. Reposting emotional footage can add to a family’s pain long after the news cycle moves on.
• Privacy matters most in loss. Even families connected to the film industry deserve room to mourn.

If you come across the video, the kindest choice is not to share it further.
