Apple has launched the all-new Studio Display XDR alongside a refreshed base Studio Display — and together, they retire the seven-year-old Pro Display XDR for good. The Studio Display XDR replaces the 32-inch 6K Pro Display XDR that launched in 2019 at $5,000 without a stand, now bringing more advanced display technology in a 27-inch form factor at $3,299 — with a stand included.

What Makes the Studio Display XDR Special
The Studio Display XDR’s mini-LED backlight uses 2,304 local dimming zones — four times more than the Pro Display XDR’s 576 zones — which should mean better contrast and significantly less blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Combined with 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, this is the most capable Apple display ever made for the price.

The XDR model also adds support for the Adobe RGB colour gamut alongside P3, along with DICOM medical imaging presets that allow it to be calibrated for diagnostic radiology — pending FDA approval. That’s a remarkably specific professional use case for a consumer-facing product, and signals how seriously Apple is targeting creative and medical workflows with this display.
The 120Hz Adaptive Sync refresh rate is limited to Macs with M4 and M5 chips — older M1 through M3 machines are capped at 60Hz, and Intel Macs are not supported at all. The iPad Pro M5 also supports 120Hz via the Studio Display XDR.
The base Studio Display gets a meaningful but quieter update — the upgraded 12MP Center Stage camera now supports Desk View, the six-speaker system’s woofers deliver 30% deeper bass, and both models now ship with Thunderbolt 5 ports for high-speed accessory connectivity and display daisy-chaining.
