The Story Beats
The rivalry. Yeon Gaesomun grows so powerful that he threatens King Go Geon Mu. The king tries to remove him to strengthen royal authority, but ends up in danger when Yeon Gaesomun strikes back. Their clash will change Goguryeo’s fate. You can read the historical figure’s background on Wikipedia.
The loyal general. Go Yeon Mu tries to protect the king. Impressed by his loyalty, Yeon Gaesomun spares his life, but when Go Yeon Mu refuses to join him, he’s sent to Liaodong. While Go Yeon Mu defends it, Yeon Gaesomun consolidates power and prepares for a bloody war with the Tang dynasty. The drama frames them as two generals who take different paths to protect Goguryeo.
The puppet king. At the height of his power, Yeon Gaesomun places King Bojang on the throne to control the court. Bojang can only watch as his kingdom crumbles.
The downfall. After Yeon Gaesomun’s death, his sons plunge Goguryeo into civil war out of lust for power, leading the kingdom toward its end.
