Marvel has called VisionQuest the final piece of its WandaVision trilogy. But the man running the show says it’s not quite that simple. With the Disney+ premiere just days away, here’s what Terry Matalas actually said.

Trilogy or Not?

Marvel has grouped three Disney+ shows as one arc: WandaVision (2021), Agatha All Along (2024) and now VisionQuest. The studio has repeatedly described the new show as the trilogy’s finale.

Matalas told SFX Magazine that it wasn’t really developed that way. He called it more of a sequel to WandaVision in many ways, but said it “really exists on its own.” In his words, it’s the Vision story, digging into who he is in ways the films and WandaVision couldn’t, including parts of his origin that may go back further than fans believed.

A Fan Taking the Wheel

Matalas says nobody is a bigger WandaVision fan than he is, and that this will be obvious when people watch. Working with Paul Bettany, one of his bucket-list actors, is a thrill for him.

Bettany’s Bumpy Road

Bettany admitted that the path to this show wasn’t smooth. At one point he expected to make it with WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer, and said the change felt like the rug had been pulled from under him. But after meeting Matalas for lunch in New York, he was won over, saying Matalas had really great ideas. His takeaway is that life is curly, however much you try to control things.

The WandaVision Threads

The show still carries some familiar elements:

  • Tommy Maximoff: Billy’s twin brother, reincarnated after WandaVision, is flooded with memories of a family in a Westview house he can’t reconcile with his real life.
  • A search for his father: Tommy goes looking for the man he once knew.
  • Billy’s possible cameo: Trailer footage hinted at Joe Locke’s Billy Maximoff, who was last seen searching for his brother.

Why Standing Alone May Help?

According to The Direct’s analysis, dropping the trilogy label gives VisionQuest room to breathe. As a closer, it would have to tie up other characters’ loose ends. As a Vision-centered identity story about a synthezoid living among humans, it can focus on the aftermath of White Vision’s flight from Westview. The big question is how much of the old Vision remains in this new version.
