Jung Yong Hwa Plays a Romance King Who Refuses to Kiss, and Can’t Sing

A romance expert who never films kissing scenes? A vocalist playing a tone-deaf singer? “Oh! My Guard” sounds like a rom-com built on delicious contradictions, and lead actor Jung Yong Hwa has just shared what drew him to it.

The Story in a Nutshell

Uhm Tae Bong is an A-list actor with a fatal flaw. Oh Hae Ra is a mysterious woman who believes she is Cha Hong Doo, the female lead of his drama. What follows is described as an unpredictable love story.

Why He Said Yes?

After three years away from acting, Jung Yong Hwa says the concept pulled him in. He found the idea of spending time with an artist you love, and even protecting them personally, interesting. By the time he read the script, he was already looking forward to what would happen next. You can read more about his career as a singer-actor on Wikipedia.

A Character Full of Contradictions

Tae Bong has the looks, the acting skills and the star power. He has even earned the nickname “romance expert” for his romantic dramas. Yet he follows one strict rule: no kissing scenes. He also has a surprising weakness: he’s tone-deaf.

Jung Yong Hwa called the premise fresh. He even wondered, while reading the script, what makes this character so charming.

Where Actor and Character Overlap?

The star sees some of himself in Tae Bong. He describes the character as very professional, someone who gives his all at work but is left alone once he gets home, and says that part feels similar to him.

How He Pulled It Off?

Playing a romantic lead without physical contact is tricky. Here’s how Jung Yong Hwa approached it:

• Emotional flow: He focused on what Tae Bong feels in each situation so the emotions connect naturally from scene to scene.
• Small details: He paid attention to the gaze, tone of voice and the moments when the characters look at each other.
• Romance without contact: He thought carefully about how to convey romantic feelings without relying on direct physical contact.

As CNBLUE’s vocalist, he had to do the opposite of what he does best. His most memorable scene is the one where he sings IU’s “Good Day” deliberately off-key. He admits it was harder than he expected.
