Some TV mysteries are left open on purpose. HBO’s Lanterns just confirmed that one of its biggest is exactly that.
What We Know So Far?
Kelly MacDonald plays Kerry Kane, a Sheridan County deputy and love interest for Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan. She looks like a small-town Rushville local, but her roots are in Gotham City. Her father was a snitch inside a criminal organization that killed him in 2007. Kerry ran, her car died in Rushville, and gangsters caught up with her at a diner. Zoe Macon, the Manhunter, saved her.
Showrunner Chris Mundy told CBR the writers have discussed the answer at length and “all kind of know” it. He wouldn’t name names in case a future project needs it. His one hint was that it’s Gotham’s criminal underworld.
Who Could It Be? Top Lanterns Theories
| Suspect | Why It Fits | Chance of Appearing in the DCU |
|---|---|---|
| Carmine Falcone / Salvatore Maroni | Classic Gotham mob bosses, and the likeliest source of a snitch-killing | Low (both are in The Batman films) |
| Penguin or Black Mask | Famous villains with big criminal empires | Medium |
| Court of Owls | Kane is Martha Wayne’s maiden name and Batwoman’s surname | Medium |
| Rupert Thorne | A lesser-known mobster linked to Creature Commandos | Medium |
My own read is that the Court of Owls theory is the most fun, because the surname link is hard to ignore. The mob-boss theory is simply the safest bet.
The Twist That Makes This Bigger
Kerry isn’t only a mystery. In Lanterns, she’s the one who killed Hal Jordan, panicking when he learned her son Noah is a Manhunter. She walked free anyway. Co-creator Tom King suggested that living with guilt is its own sentence.
So will we see her again? HBO and DC Studios are in early development on Season 2, but the story may leave Rushville for a more sci-fi setting. That makes a Kerry return uncertain.
