Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has been a contract rebel for a while now, and it seems like the Dutchman’s time at Anfield will be coming to an end when the season concludes this summer. The player has an agreement in place to join Barcelona, as reported by the Sunday Times.Â
While this has not been made official, the agreement is only in principle and will be made concrete when the contract with Liverpool fully expires.
The Merseyside club has tried multiple times to offer a new contract to Wijnaldum since he is one of their most reliable and consistent players in the heart of the park, but there have been concerns from the player himself regarding the amount being offered and whether it will be enough.
Barcelona have been targeting Wijnaldum since last summer, alongside Memphis Depay from Lyon. However, they failed to negotiate a fee with Liverpool for the player last summer and are now set to have the player join them this summer for free.
Given the financial situation at Barcelona, the free transfer will be seen as an absolute steal given the quality of the 30-year-old and his ability to add to any team that he plays for. One of the other free transfers that Barcelona have managed to negotiate from the Premier League includes Eric Garcia from Manchester City.
Liverpool will need to replace Wijnaldum this summer and they have been linked with Renato Sanches in the past as a potential name to succeed the Dutchman at Anfield.
