Pedro Rodríguez has called time on his playing career. The Spanish World Cup winner, who became one of football’s most decorated serial winners, announced his retirement on Wednesday at the age of 39, ending a career that took him from Barcelona’s academy to Chelsea, Roma and Lazio.

The Announcement

Pedro shared the news in a statement on social media. “I feel that the moment has come. The moment to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” he wrote. “I leave proud of having lived my dream and of all the people who were by my side to make it come true.” He closed with a message to the game itself: “Thank you, football, for making me so happy.” He had been a free agent since leaving Lazio in July.

The Barcelona Years

Born in Tenerife, Pedro joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy in 2004 and broke into the first team in 2008. He flourished under Pep Guardiola and became part of a side he later described in his farewell video as “the best Barca side in history,” saying “we won everything and amazed the world.” He played alongside Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández, won 20 major trophies with the club, and collected five La Liga titles.

His Champions League record stands out. He came off the bench in the 2009 final win over Manchester United, then scored the opening goal when Barcelona beat the same opponent 3-1 in the 2011 final. He was also a substitute in the 2015 final victory over Juventus, after Luis Suárez and Neymar joined Messi in the attack.

Chelsea, Roma and Lazio

Pedro left Barcelona in 2015 for Chelsea. Some questioned whether he could handle the physicality of the Premier League, but he quickly answered those doubts and became a key performer at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League title with the club. He then moved to Italy, where he achieved the rare feat of playing for both Roma and Lazio. His final stint was at Lazio, where he made more than 200 appearances. Switching to Italian, he paid tribute to the country that welcomed him as an elder statesman of the game.

A World Cup Winner for Spain

Pedro was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad and started the final against the Netherlands. He also helped La Roja win Euro 2012. In total he earned 65 caps and scored 17 goals for his country. Reflecting on that night, he said that one day, almost without believing it, he became a world champion and a starter in a World Cup final.

Why It Matters

Pedro’s career was built on reliability and humility rather than headlines. He won at the highest level with Barcelona, Spain and Chelsea, and his trophy haul of 25 major honours places him among the most successful players of his generation.
